I'm interested in the UCs (mainly UCSD or UCLA), and I was wondering where should I say I live for the admission application. My parents are currently separated (I live with mom in Pennsylvania and during the summer with my dad in California), so I technically live in two locations. So would my chances improve if I stated that lived in California when applying to the UCs or would it be better if I said that I was out of state. I heard that the UCs accept in-state applicants first (which may approve my odds), but I also heard that being out of state can also approve odds.

They will wonder how you managed to have a HS transcript from PA if you live in CA. Your primary residence is Pennsylvania.

You are living with your mom during the school year, so unless you are flying out to CA every weekend in addition to every school holiday, you are with your mom more than with your dad. This makes her address your address for college applications, and her your “custodial” parent for financial aid purposes.

If you are seriously interested in studying in CA, ask your dad to find out the specific policies each university there has for determining residence for tuition and fees purposes. There used to be a specific rule that allowed students to pay in-state fees based on a parent’s residence in CA even if the student had been living OOS with the other parent during high school.
