Where should I visit in LA?

So, I'm going down to LA in 2 weeks and I have roughly a day and a half to see the campus and city, where would you recommend I visit? Hotels? Restaurants? Attractions?

I'm coming from ~1hr south of San Jose, so any tips on what route to take and how long the drive will likely be?

What type of food do you enjoy? I know some cool restaurants you can check out while you're sight seeing some of the nicer parts of LA. What city is this south of San Jose? I don't think it should take more than 5 maybe 6 hours or so to make the drive.

I like Third Street in Santa Monica. It's very lively.
If you're a girl, shopping here is going to be awesome. :)

101 South to 152 East to I-5 South all the way to LA, then take 405 South and exit Sunset Blvd. to UCLA.

nice and fast drive (except when you get to LA)

Thanks :)
It's Aptos (close to Santa Cruz) I just wanted to pick a big city for reference.
For food ... nothing in particular, probably someplace relatively inexpensive.

if you're coming from aptos, then either 101 or I5 should be about the same since you would have to go over the santa cruz mountains to get to gilroy first before you can take 152 -> I5.

If you enjoy museums, go to the Getty. If you want shopping, Third Street Promenade or Hollywood and Highland. If you want beaches, go to Malibu (I recommend Point Dume). If you want hiking, you can take a quick day hike up in Malibu Canyon or Mount San Antonio if you want a +10000 ft climb.

I also recommend a trip to Chinatown for some dim sum, and maybe a night at Citywalk.

i want some dim sum. :(

I love dim sum...

It's really sad how little I enjoy Japanese food, considering that I spend so much time there. Oh wait, I also don't like Japan...at least not Saga, Japan.

Anyway, that's another story. As for other places to visit, I recommend the Long Beach Aquarium. It's not the Monterey Bay Aquarium, but it's pretty nice.

If you're a baseball fan, then a day at Dodger Stadium is pretty fun. Even if you don't like the Dodgers, it's a stadium with a helluva lot of history.

But this is a day trip, so I guess most of this is out.

Diddy Riese Cookies, they are world mutha ****in famous

How could you not like Japan? It's the best place in the world for gaijin.

Koreatown.

flopsy makes an excellent point.

Oh, and  for good measure.

I'd recommend the typical tourist places, but try to go there on a weekday when it's less crowded.

Hollywood & Highland and other places around Hollywood, Santa Monica Pier, 3rd street promenade

There are a few nice places in Orange County, too, but the drive will be a bit further (it's about an hour away, depending on traffic). There's Fashion Island, Balboa Peninsula, South Coast Plaza (my absolute FAVORITE shopping center - it's really amazing), Downtown Disney, Disneyland

You could google these places and find those travel sites, too. Have fun!

I second Santa Monica's third street promenade and the pier, it's close to UCLA, and even if you dont' like to shop you can enjoy the beautiful view and clean air of santa monica.

comparatively clean air of santa monica

I recommend going to my second home "Little Ethiopia"

3rd Street Promenade - Santa Monica
Chinese Theatre - Hollywood
Griffith Park...

the typical tourist route....
