My daughter is 16 and looking at colleges. Shes african american/native american and she is a virginia resident. what good schools around virginia accept students with a 3.2 to 3.4 gpa?

If her SATs are good she might try William and Mary or UVa…

Are you sharing this account with your D? Because all the other posts under this name claim to be a junior in high school who wants to go to schools in the Virginia area. It’s a good idea for each of you to get your own account so that people don’t get confused. Also, if you’ve posted in one forum, it’s not necessary to cross post in a bunch of others.

this is my daughters account, i didnt think it would matter if i got on it.

(It doesn’t really matter if you share an account. It’s just confusing sometimes because a parent’s post will be very different than a child’s post.

GPA is only one piece of the admission’s criteria. What are her SAT and ACT scores? If she hasn’t taken any, she needs to sign up for some. Once she has her scores, it will be easier to make recommendations.

What is her likely major and career goal?

Also, how much can you afford to contribute towards her education each year?

Is her GPA weighted or unweighted? According to the schools’ common data sets, 6 percent of entering freshmen had GPAs under 3.5 at W & M, and 4 percent were under that number at UVA. If her weighted GPA is higher and if she’s had a rigorous curriculum that will help, as will instate status, URM status, possible involvement in particular ECs, etc.

You’re fortunate in being from VA, which has such an excellent instate system. University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg is quite similar in feel to W & M, but less selective. Would your d like a large school setting? James Madison University might be for her (29 percent of entering freshmen had hs GPAs under 3.5). What does your d want to study?

Hi,
I am also a virginia resident and S is hispanic. Virginia schools really, really want to keep instate minority kids who are likely to succeedd. Your daughter fits the bill. Not only should she look at VaTech, James Madison and Mary Washington, but there are really good small schools such as Radford and University of Richmond. The latter offers lots of aid and scholarships to instate minority kids. PLEASE invest in an SAT prep class if your daughter is not disciplined in doing self study…it really pays off. Also, lots of scholarships for virginia kids–minority and not–and probably some local/county ones too. Talk to your minority student coordinator (most districts or schools have someone) who will know about opportunities that you can’t always find on the web. Definitely sign up for Fastweb scholarship search with your daughter’s profile. My son has had several good outcomes from this. Good luck!

Posts by polite students are welcome on this board, so it would be fine if your daughter posted here herself.

Old Dominion is the most diverse college in Va. Don’t forget George Mason and VCU.

More information would be helpful.

Lots of looking is a great way to start! Don’t just look at the big name schools – do a computer search for Virginia Colleges and understand the full scope of what is available. Some of the things that pop up will be rinky dink and not accredited. (The Sunshine College of Pet Care. . . The Tech Institute of Lower Dipswitch etc) but there will be also some smaller schools that will be strong and excellent.
Good luck on this adventure!

You might to post on 2 threads in the Parents Forum with very knowledgeable, supportive parents: the B+ students thread and the 3.0-3.3 studnets thread.

Best of luck. Have you looked at Roanoke?
