Just wondering if obtaining and undergraduate degree and completing all coursework in Canada would affect an applicant (US permanent resident) is he/she is applying to US Allopathic medical schools.

I think some require all coursework to be done at an accredited US undergraduate institution while some others say North American, and there are probably other variations out there, BUT what is the general consensus?

OK, I really need input now. I got into the most prestigious and competitive ‘premed’ program in Canada (I say premed because it’s a huge feeder to medical schools here…something like 40% go to medical schools with another 20% off to dentistry, 10% to law, etc…and as you may now, in Canada, getting into medical school is very, very tough. Most schools won’t even interview below a 32 MCAT and GPAs of 3.85+ are the norm at some of the meds).

I need to know the following:

Can I do my premed coursework in Canada and apply to US allopathic medical school? Are there schools in the US that want my coursework to be done in the US?..in particular, the Texas state medical schools.

Would anyone know how residency matching/the number of positions, etc. vary in the US v. Canada? Would it be tougher to get into a residency of choice if I go to a medical school in Canada v. the US? (Assuming US Perm. resident status)

NOTE: I would like to practice in the US over in Canada for the following reasons:
-greater compensation in the US
-more options for work (private, etc.)
-much better facilities + equipment (trust me, it’s true, one of the best neurosurgeons in my province left to the US because he was tired of working with outdated equipment and he couldn’t improve as a physician…he was very disgruntled)

So, I’m confused. I need some answers and I hope I can get some from CC’ers!

You should look up the requirements at each school you are looking at. For example:

[Prospective Medical Students](http://www.utsouthwestern.edu/utsw/cda/dept20676/files/397484.html#requirements)
UT Southwestern appears to be US degrees only.

[Admissions Requirements | Admissions](http://www.uth.tmc.edu/med/administration/admissions/admissions-requirements.html)
[Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center :: School of Medicine : Admissions : Requirements](http://www.ttuhsc.edu/som/admissions/reqs.aspx)

UTLubbock and UTHouston specifically state that pre-reqs completed in the US or canada are acceptable.

Further questions and exceptions to these rules can easily be found by calling the admission office at each school.
