Hello, people. My name is Eric and I attend a community college in Virginia. I was perusing through these most noble of forums and felt the urge to throw my two cents in.

I applied to UVa as well as VaTech and W&M. If i were to be accepted into all three, I would choose uva. I wanted to see what you guys thought of my chances into getting into uva, as well as open a thread for other transfer prospects.

Lets get the bad news out: I dropped out of high school about five years ago. I explained the circumstances on the application and feel that it may even be some sort of advantage. I expressed how much dropping out actually shoved me into the hands of the diabolical 'real world' and taught me a lot. About two years ago I straightened up my act and starting dominating our local community college, 4.0 and all.

I now sit rather high in my own office as the SGA president. I have taken the hardest classes in almost every major subject (ie - ochem, lin alg, etc) and somehow managed to come out with a cum GPA of 3.8. Also, I mentored kids with emotional and behavorial disorders - that was actually a job and I loved it. I haven't talked to many ppl experienced with transfers, but how does all this sound to you guys? Any transfers received their letters yet? Are any of you out there?

I am freakin anxious, dudes and dudettes. help a brotha out.

Have you discussed this with the CC? At our high school's college night last fall, the rep from the local CC highlighted their 2 year associates degree program that includes a "must admit" agreement with several Virginia 4-year colleges and universities. You have to complete their transfer program academic degree track and meet a GPA requirement (3.8 is well above it). A quick search turned up this: NVCC: Academic Services. W&M, Mason, GMU, and UVA are all listed. Some of the agreements are with NOVA only, many appear to cover the entire Virginia CC system. Good luck!

here,
yea - Ive heard all bout those, but it was hard to 1) follow my potnential 4year curriculum 2) get an associates degree and 3) take all of the classes required under the articulation. All three have some pretty rough reuirements that if mixed, would take forever. It isnt just an assoiciates degree you need. There is a link on UVa's website explaining this.

shoe,

No, I just go around to all the colleges and show them how truly cool I can be. Seriously! jk - but isnt this more college students than anything? therefore, the audience changes? hm!! ;D

One of the lessons you learn as you go forward in life is that the audience for what you say, write and/or do is often wider than you might think.

Lousy first impressions don’t do a person any good, and can be rather difficult to overcome. So why create them?

Well, I see that this thread has definitely turned in the direction that was certinaly not intended. I am very sorry if I offended anyone. The whole process has been rough and long, but worth it. I was just trying to liven it up a bit. I think you guys are perhaps misunderstanding the true interest I have in finding this information and getting in touch with out transfer folks out there.

I don't see anything wrong with the OP's post. I'd rather read a well-written essay with a little bit of "edge" than some pinhead seventeen-year-old's essay on why he has a passion for medicine.

I think Dean J has written on her Blog that transfer decisions will be finalized by May 1st. Here are links to her Blog and the UVa Transfer Blog. You can find more information there.

Thanks, Hopeful. I heard about those blogs, but couldn't find them on the UVa website.

Right - the deadline is May 1st. That deadline is shared by most Virginia colleges, including Tech. However, some of Tech's decisions have been sent through the mail already. I figured it was worth a shot to ask if anyones received their UVa decision.

I felt my essays did a very god job at showing who I was, what I could bring to the college, and what made me an individual. I can only hope that UVa feels the same way. As long as I have accurately portrayed myself, I feel that getting denied is less of an issue. However, I am proud of how high I have climbed after highschool. To get where I am now didn't take a day or a week, it was years of hardwork to rebuild the bridges I burned when I was younger.

I read that VCCS transfers have been over 30 percent of recent incoming transfer classes. Has anyone else heard this?

Amen. Grammar mistakes? This is a forum after all, calm down people.

OP - I hope you get into UVa, I like your style.

Man, I've been reading these forums off and on for a few years and have never seen the lack of transfers to uva. This may be a good year for me, or im mistaken. I noticed that they extended the deadline for applications for transfer students like, 3 times. I would take that as a good sign - that they may not have had as many applicant as they wanted. That would, in effect, give me better chances for acceptance.

Maybe i am just reading into it too much ;D.

I applied as a transfer to McIntire. 3.0 GPA, Varsity Athlete at D1 Big East program, and URM is pretty much the synopsis of my stats. I remember seeing a stat that mentioned approximately 20% of external transfers are accepted to McIntire. I believe my teacher recommendation and essays regarding "Why UVa" and "Why McIntire" are my strengths that will hopefully make my 3.0 GPA seem not so pedestrian.

cubano, nice to meet you and good luck, my man! Yea, C school is probably the most competitive to transfer to. The VP of the SGA didnt aplply with a 3.3 GPA, but I thought that was a big mistake on his part - he would have given his left arm to go to c school. Im glad you applied becuase as you have probably seen, numbers arent everything. 3.0 is decent, but if you impress them with essays and letters of rec. then you will be a lot more competitive.

only having read the first few posts in this thread... lol@accusations for diction on the internet.

if this were the UVa Application site, I might say something. seeing as how it's a forum... nah.

the internet is serious business guys...
no but for real people come here to learn and talk about legit things, so eh, I'd rather not see them get flamed and trolled like they have the potential for, but I don't think there was anything wrong with the way you worded your op. just keep in mind that this entire website was set up for elitists so it's not unreasonable to see reactions like we've seen here.

So I applied directly into Mcintire this year from a 4 year private college in DC. I applied to UVa CAS last year OOS as a transfer and was accepted but could not attend for financial reasons. I have the money this year so hopefully I will be accepted so that I can attend. I have a 3.6 GPA in the honors program, 2100/2400 SAT with many difficult courses(two levels of Chinese, Calc II, Lin Algebra, several higher level philosophy courses, etc.). I also already work 15 hrs/week as an analyst at an Investment Bank and am the president of my schools traveling debating society as a Sophomore.

I guess my worry is that 1)I believe my GPA may be too low and 2)I do not believe that I have one of the requirements(the intro business course?), but I have taken Information Technology, Business Finance, Marketing, and the Economics requirements so hopefully they will A) let me take it when I get there or B) Let me take it somewhere over the summer. Hopefully it will work out as I have become extremely impressed with the Mcintire program.

i talked to a uva counselor sometime ago, and what specifically remember was her saying: "if youre accepted into the spring semester, you have a guarantee into the fall semester." So, did you check if you even had to apply?

Personally, even if you didnt - I think that you have the stats to get in as a transfer.

haha - thanks for backing me up, guys. I was shocked at my first few responses and about gave up on CC. Anyway, I still hvae those questions on my mind: do you guys think im a competitive applicant for transfering into SEAS?

I applied to Va tech, W&M, and UVA. I dont know 100% what I want to major in at the moment, but if I decide on engineering I will probably go to Tech. Otherwise, I will go to UVA. If I get into UVA I would like to double major in mathematics/philosophy and it seems to be possible with some hard work.
