@lovetoact Sarah Bareilles is self trained. Her major at UCLA was communications.

^^^ I was going to say that. Love Waitress songs…

This list really shows how varied the backgrounds of people are. Many didn’t even major in theatre/go to college! It’s amazing, but not too surprising, as it really does seem to come down to one’s work ethic, ability to take advantage of opportunities, determination, connections (which can come from a multitude of places), and, yes, talent and plain old luck!

Cynthia Erivo (The color purple) only applied to RADA. Hadn’t originally planned to apply to drama school, but was at a loose end after deciding music therapy wasn’t the route for her. Was encouraged to apply by a director she’d done a youth program with.
Major risk that worked out.

Excellent @MTMom98 !
And I’m so excited for David Furr! This summer, I saw Cymbeline in Central Park and had ‘stage’ seats. The actual stage was raised, but there were a few rows of seats on an elevated deck next to the stage. The people sitting in these seats had a few lines or reactions during the show that cast members taught us before the show started. Our cast member was David and he talked to our group about his experiences in various Shakespeare companies/performances. He had recently been cast in Noises Off and I thought that in itself was a big deal (it is!), but now to have been nominated for a Tony! My big regret is that I didn’t see Noises Off during its run—I was hoping to see it during Unifieds but then we had that darn blizzard and everything was cancelled!

Two Northwestern grads are also receiving Lifetime Achievement Tonys… http://www.northwestern.edu/newscenter/stories/2016/05/sheldon-harnick-and-marshall-w.-mason-to-receive-special-tonys.html

Thank you for posting, @MTMom98 ! This represents a great cross-section of schools!

^^Which proves there’s more than one way to skin a cat.

Remember that this is a dance heavy show- a coup,e of the Juilliard and CCM people were dance majors (Juilliard does not have an MT major, the have VP, Acting, and Dance)

^^The two from Point Park who are in principal roles were also dance majors. My guess is, based on previous casts of CATS, that many of the others were also likely to have been dance majors.
