Well I've started the college process but a little apprehensive where to apply. I feel that most of my choices are out of my range and looking for some alternatives.
My stas are..
African-American Male
GPA: 3.48 (upward trend, Junior year almost all honors, this year All Honors + 2 AP)
Rank: 30/470ish (top 6-7%)
SAT: Best scores (took them twice):
CR: 630 Math:590 Writing:600
ACT:26

I'd prefer a school in an city or with stuff going on (no rural for me) and not interested in Historically black colleges. Also schools with a strong science department/pre-med.

I've been told to look at UDel, University of Vermont and Temple. Would I be able to get into any honor programs? Looking for some feedback!

Hi!

Great ranking!!! :)

What is your home state?

Lots of good pre-med schools out there, so you will have choices! :)

I know that there are some LACs that would love to have you. :)

I see you want a school with “stuff going on”. Do you mean things to do in the city, or on campus (clubs, sports, etc), or both?

will you need financial aid? Do you know what your family’s EFC might be? Do you know the approx income of your family?

Hi! My home state is NJ and by “Stuff going on” I meant like a city or town with a lot of stuff to do. And yes, I will be applying for FA. My counselor recommended I look into the LACs but none seemed to be anywhere of interest to me or they seemed like a far reach.

Rhodes is in the heart of Memphis, TN, and has a lot of students who go on to medical school from the bio, physics, and chem departments.

Ok…

This is what I suggest…there are many parents in the parents forum who know which pre-med programs/schools will be financially super generous to a male URM with good stats and ranking :)

So, make a new thread in the Parents Forum with a subject line something like this…

African American male with good stats/ranking needs FA at a good pre-med school.

Believe me, there are moms on that forum who know which schools will want to snap you up because you’re a dedicated student, and those schools they want to help their diversity numbers. :)

In the body of the post, put your stats, your school interests, your home state, etc.

Best of luck to you! :)

From a financial standpoint, you might well be best off at an LAC that does have a lot of weekend activity and/or i snear a city and which wants to increase its diversity (I am sure you bring a lot of other good attributes to the table, but I am just referring to your chances to extra merit $ on top of financial need $).
You may also find a smaller school is a much more personal experience than the large schools you named.

Some possibilities of various sizes: Villanova; Ursinus; Franklin & Marshall; Drew; Marist; Fairfield; Maryland; Drexel.

Good luck

Thanks everybody for your responses! I will move over to the parents forum lol

And I have looked at Drew and will apply there. Is Villanova a good option for Pre-Med?

Villanova is an awesome school. But, your stats are a bit low for them. However, if they need to expand their diversity numbers, they might snap you up. :)

I don’t know how well Villanova meets need though. You don’t want to end up with a gap - or huge student loans, since you’ll likely need loans for med school (and those could be super huge).

Our numbers for the incoming freshmen in the honors program at Temple last year:

3.85 GPA, 1337/1600 SAT
