where to attend college ?

I'm from New York and i plan on attending college in the fall of 2011. I have decided what my majors going to be, but am unsure of where i want to go to college. They type of enviornment i want to be in should have a warm climate with a beach nearby. I would like to be in a place where the seasons change just as long as it doesn't get too cold around winter and i would also prefer to stay on the east coast. Now i'd appreciate it if someone could give me schools matching this criteria.

I don’t know your stats, but the first school that comes to mind is UNC-Wilmington.

What are your stats?

What major(s)?

How much will your parents spend?

The answers to those questions will likely determine where you should apply.

My gpa is about ah 3.7 i received a 19 on my ACT but I’ll be taking it over i know my grades will improve on it. Im going to major in finance, and my mom isn’t trying to spend more than $30,000. Can you make sure the city has an open job marke.

$30k per year or $30k total?

Disregarding the cost of attendance for now (you do need to look into it and financial aid options):

In North Carolina - UNC Wilmington, East Carolina
In South Carolina - Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston
Georgia - Not much on the coast
Northern Florida - Florida State, Univ. of North Florida

A year … And i know im going to fill out some scholarships hopefully i get them. Is UNC a good school ?

maybe Monmouth Univ in NJ. I may be more familiar with it because I’m from NJ but a lot of its social scene is basically based around the New Jersey shore (NOT the show). Practically everyone I know who goes there seems to spend time at the beach. It does get pretty cold around winter though, similar weather to NY state.

Disregarding the cost of attendance for now (you do need to look into it and financial aid options):

Not good advice…especially for a student with a 19 ACT (39th percentile). A school that will likely accept a 19 ACT won’t likely give good aid.

**Finance major…so you need a college with a good B-school **that will accept an ACT 19…hmmmm. That’s going to be tough, but we’ll find some!

How important is having the ocean nearby? (After all, you’ll be at school during “non-beach” months…LOL)

What else do you want in a school?

quiet campus?

rah rah spirited campus with big sports to watch?

Lots of clubs?

UNC-Wilmington is not as strong as UNC-Chapel Hill. Its reputation may be improving but its not at Chapel Hill’s level. Here’s a thread on it: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-north-carolina-wilmington/783703-welcome-new-university-north-carolina-wilmington-forum.html

It meets your criteria of moderate climate and being close to the beach. I’m not sure those should be the most important criteria for college but so be it. For a career in finance coming from there you’ll probably be looking at Charlotte (a major banking center) or maybe Raleigh-Durham.

College of Charleston is a hot school right now and also might be worth a look. (Great city, nice beaches nearby.) You probably need to raise your ACT.

If your goal is to go back to NY though, you probably should look to the Northeast schools regardless of climate.

@ mom2collegekids im not that worried about my low ACT scor of 19 because i know i can do better last time i took it it was a last minute thing. I will be taking it again and i plan on scoring at least a 25.

A beach is fairly important to me because having one close-by has always been how i expected my college experience to be. The surrouding are can’t be boring ; I don’t want to be in the middle of nowhere. I’d like to have a numerous amount of clubs around and things to do like dave and busters pool halls etc.

the type of campus i want to be on is the thing i don’t know about i wouldn’t mind a commuter campus but i’d rather a campus where people are involved. Also i don’t really want to be in a dorm.

Thanks for the info but that’s the thing i don’t want to come back to New York when i leave i just want to be gone for good. Florida is really where i want to go but are there schools worth it ? And a warm climate and beach near-by aren’t the main things im basing my college of choice on those are just aspects i’d like the city to have if i plan on staying for 4 years or even permanantley. I don’t think the Carolinas is somewhere i could see myself but if it comes down to it I’ll go.

Hawaii Pacific University starts admission at ACT 18 to 23, has finance major at bachelors and masters level , cost around $25,000 per year, leaves room for an airfare home.
Its private not for profit.
Univ of Hawaii-Manoa is public, cost is $12k net but the ACT admissions start at 21 to 26 the finance major is larger with over 100 kids in the program.
I heard the waves are killers…

What about Flagler College in Jacksonville, FL?

@theresacpa They sent me something in the mail is Flagler a good school ? I’vw also looked at the University of North FLorida and Fiu ; Do you know anything abou those schools ?

Don’t know anything about them, but I bet someone on here does. Did you try searching for Flagler in the threads?

Flagler is in St. Augustine. Beautiful campus. Students integrate into the city nicely, but I don’t really know anything about the academics.

New College of Florida and Eckard-liberal arts colleges in Florida. Don’t know if they have a business major, but they surely have Economics.

*Also i don’t really want to be in a dorm. *

Well, many schools these days are requiring freshmen to live on campus the first year. What do you have against dorms?

I think Monmouth is a good idea. So is Flagler.

Hawaii Pacific costs a bit more than $25k…

Total Estimated Costs for 2010-2011:

Tuition… $15,720

Room and Board… $11,648

books…$1,000

Direct costs…about…$28,000 Plus personal expenses and misc costs.

So, probably still do-able.

When do you get your new ACT scores ?

@ricegal no but im going to search in the threads now thanks

@M’s mom what part of florida is it in ?
