Where to Buy Textbooks?

I'm looking for the cheapest textbooks I can, and so far am having the most luck at amazon and half.com. Where is everyone else buying their books?

And should I wait til school starts? Or if anybody has taken any of these classes and can tell me if you will actually use books in the classes? Thanks.

You should wait until classes start and the professors tell you what books you specifically need. Sometimes they have some on that list that are completely supplemental. I’ve heard of come calculus courses never using their book except if the student needed extra help. Right now my UGS303 class has a ridiculous number of (albeit cheap) books listed, like 5. I’m going to wait until class starts, and I bet some will be optional.

And don’t most people just buy through the CO-OP? They already have all the books there, and you can just easily pick them off. Plus they have that rebate/buyback program and will help you recover lost textbooks.

Devoted,
There is an earlier thread that has 31 posts that will give you all the answers you need. I know, because I started it a few weeks ago. Books are expensive, and doing the research can save you lots. Check it out. Do a thread search for the title below.

Discount text books? ( 1 2 3)

Even though there is another thread I will post this here.

Don’t buy all of your books from the Co-op right away without checking other places. Sure, its nice because its there and you dont have to wait around for shipping but you should really compare the prices to other sites, like Amazon, for example. If its the same at Amazon + shipping as it is at the co-op, I would get it at the Co-op but if it costs significantly less at Amazon (I’m talking new books or slightly used. Most of the books for my classes are ones I’d like to keep so I don’t want a crappy version.) then I would just get it from there. Half.com is also good but I have been using Amazon recently since I have this free two day shipping thing.

Also, check around online to see if the company of your textbook has an e-book available for download. For my summer class we were supposed to buy this book that was $50 used at the co-op and everywhere online and I found an ebook for $20.

Also ignore the custom thing. Go ahead and buy it somewhere else.

I had that same calculus book and we did not use it but I had a different teacher I think.

cheapbooks.com is the bomb. Don’t forget to search the co-op classifieds, too.

how do you know which textbooks to get for your courses???

find your class in the Course Registrar. click on the unique number and at the bottom should be “Check Textbooks for this Course”.

everyone i’ve talked to said to wait until classes start to buy your textbooks becuase most of them made the mistake of buying all the books and never using half of them

For those who want to buy textbooks before classes start, the Fall 2009 textbook listings are now up on the Co-op website:

[University Co-op - Textbooks](http://www.universitycoop.com/ePOS?form=shared3/textbooks/main.html&store=108)

If you shouldn’t buy it until school starts, how late into the course will you need your textbooks?

It may take a while to get them if you buy them online won’t it?..

I would just say don’t buy a $70+ book beforehand unless you are absolutely positive that you will need it a lot. If your class has a lot of novels, there is no way you are going to need all of them at the same time so it wouldn’t matter if you ordered them online and they took a while to come.

Also, people have been saying that you don’t need your books for the first week of class or are not required to have them by then.

Its just a way to save money. I mean if you want to have all your books then go ahead and get them now. But you might not need them all and that money could have been used for something else down the road.

ok thanks…Do you know how to pay for books with a scholarship? I received $500 and UT has received it already…I want to use that to buy books

idk if it is the same for scholarships but for other types of fin aid they apply it to your tuition first and then after tuition is paid they release the extra to your bank account and you can use it as you please.
