We plan to visit UNC next week for a few days (Thur - Sat). What are some good and reasonably priced places to eat in Chapel Hill & Raleigh?

I don’t know anything about Raleigh, but for UNC:

Spanky’s and the Carolina Brewery are two good and reasonably priced places. They’re considered almost fancy for us stingy college kids, but for a family they’re pretty normal priced.

Ditto for not knowing about Raleigh, but as for Chapel Hill…

Buns. On Columbia, pretty much where Franklin and Columbia meet. Best Hamburgers ever. You have to go.

Noodles and Company. On Franklin Street, headed towards Carborro. Really good noodles, pretty cheap.

Weaver Street Market- Fresh, local, good food. On Main Street in Carborro.

Elmo’s. In Carborro, next to Harris Teeter in the Carr City Mall, or something like that. Really close to Weaver Street Market.

Time Out or 35 Chinese- Both are in University Square, and have good food.

Here’s a link to a number of good restaurants at all pricepoints. Many have been mentioned in posts above.

We have really enjoyed the Southern Rail, 411 West, and Elaine’s. Will caution that Elaine’s is a little pricey, but we had a wonderful dinner there.

There is a great little place on Franklin Street for breakfast, but at the moment the name escapes me. Maybe someone else can help out.

Ye Olde Waffle Shop maybe?

Crook’s Corner is absolutely fabulous, and not too expensive… Seriously, your visit would be amiss if you didn’t go here. It’s Southern Maverick cuisine, they have beautiful outside seating. You will not regret going.

At Mama Dip’s you can get yourself some soul food - tons and tons of dishes you can choose from, and if you don’t get yourself some pecan pie at the end then you’re no friend of mine.

The Spotted Dog has tons of vegetarian friendly food - I’ve only eaten there once but their fake barbecue is divine.

I often eat at Q’doba, noodles, and buns, and they’re all good, but I think you should go to those above restaurants.

For dessert there’s locopops (gourmet popsicles! They have mojito flavored, for instance!)

and the yogurt pump - crazy cheap frozen yogurt. If you go to UNC you will eat here a LOT. When the weather gets good you’ll see tons of heels lined out the door and loitering around there. Writing this makes me miss it.

Cloying

I like your recommendations.

Mama Dips is great, not just soul food but more like southern “comfort food” and amazing desserts. Sadly, we only discovered it during commencement weekend. Crooks Corner is great and a Chapel Hill institution.

The Weathervane in A Southern Season is a great lunch spot and visiting A Southern Season is an experience not to be missed if in Chapel Hill.
