Does anyone know how to get information on colleges' transfer-out rates. Some colleges, apparently, don't release that data, while others do, and among the colleges that do, the rate varies widely. More specifically, Case Western is one of the schools that doesn't release their number, and I've read from some students who transferred IN to CWRU that they hate the school and think it's overrated and really regret their decision to transfer to Case. They suggested that CWRU doesn't release its transfer-out rate because they think it would make them look bad. I know you can find many favorable student reviews of Case, as well, and so I don't know how much weight to give these reviews. Still, I think transfer-out data would be useful to know. Bucknell's, for example, is only 2.2%, according to collegeresults.com

Valid concern and likely true.

I think what you’re looking for is freshman retention rate (this includes transfers, dropouts, etc.). U.S. News tracks this data:
[Freshman Retention Rate | Rankings | Top National Universities | US News](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/freshmen-least-most-likely-return)
Incidentally, Case Western seems to have a 92% retention rate from freshman to sophomore year.

If that’s not what you want, then I’d recommend looking for the transfer applicants admissions data. If a school ends up enrolling 50 transfer students as sophomores in a given year, you can expect about the same number transferred out as typically schools want to keep their class sizes consistent.

[College Navigator - National Center for Education Statistics](http://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/)

Case Western doesn’t give the transfer rate, but one can infer the numbers from the freshman retention and graduation rates, and it looks pretty good to me. 92% freshman retention.
[College Navigator - Case Western Reserve University](http://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/?q=case+western&s=all&id=201645#retgrad)

Some of the students who don’t return are drop-outs and not transfers, and retention rate makes no distinction between the two. Transfer-out counts only those who transfer to another school. And so the two statistics measure different things.

True, but I don’t know of any colleges that have that data (or provide it). The retention rate at least gives you an upper limit on transfers.

CollegeBoard gave me the transfer stat when I completed the CSS Profile recently. Separate from retention, which usually only applies between freshman and soph years, I believe. Might snoop around there and see what they’ve got.

*oops, sorry for any of you who already read this- it was the Fafsa folks.
