where to find retirement info for CSS?

Enter the total current value of this parent's tax-deferred retirement, pension, annuity, and savings plans. Include IRA, SRA Keogh, SEP, 401(a), 401(k), 403(b), 408, 457, 501(c) plans, etc.

My dad is a state worker, but his w-2 form from last year doesn't have box 12 marked at all (the retirement plan box), also, the "ret. plan" on box 13 has an X under it, which I don't know what that means. I believe he does have the 401 (k) plan, but we aren't sure where to locate this info.

My mom doesn't have a plan, so should I just put 0 on her box?

I was a public worker too. Every year I got a statement that gave me the value of my retirement accounts. Ask your parents whether they have received a statement. If not, there should be some way for them to contact the folks holding their accounts to see the amounts.
