I was considering Art school, but I really want an university with diverse programs in case I decided to change my major (you nebee know) are there any good colleges for graphic design that aren't art schools?
@AlexTheAlps there are quite a few universities/colleges that have really good art schools within them. My D decided she wanted to go that route and we visited many on the east coast. She decided on Temple University’s Tyler School of Art. She loves the big university, big city feel and the smaller art school/art community there. But depending on where you want to go, you have a good number of options.
On the East Coast, we saw University of Hartford’s College of Art (it was a great art program but too far from the city for her), Drexel (also in Philly, but she wasn’t liking the vibe of the campus), Montclair University (she really didn’t like the area or that it was so close to home), George Washington University (it is a relatively new program bc they took over Corcoran), Virginia Commonwealth University (good program, city was vibrant and artsy but they gave zero financial aid and it’s too Southern for her liking.), RIT (way up in Rochester so it was too remote a location), Alfred University (didn’t have illustration/gd major and it was more remote than RIT).
I know University of Michigan-Stamps is a good midwestern school for art majors. UCLA on the west coast was on our long list but it was too far and too expensive.
So as you can see, there are a good number of non-art school colleges and universities to consider. If you want to know more about Temple/Tyler DM me. I would also suggest going to the National Portfolio Day website and looking at the list of colleges that attend the regional days. That’s how we found out about Temple.
Good luck!
My son is headed off to DePaul University in Chicago to study Graphic Design which is part of their College of Digital Media. He is not a “traditional artist” and this looks to be a good fit. Might be worth checking out.
one of the top graphic design programs in the country is at VCUARTS. While it is a art school and a competitive on at that, it is within the much larger Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond , VA
Yes, of course there are. Start by exploring your state university system and branch out from there.
Do you have a geographic area you’re interested in and/or limited to? That might help folks narrow down suggestions for you.
