Hello fellow students,

I applied to 4 universities (Cal Poly Pomona, Cal state Fullerton, Cal State Long Beach, and Baruch college in New York). I got admission offers from Cal Poly Pomona, CSUF, and CSULB. I want to go to Baruch college in NY because I'm majoring in Finance. Still hoping to get in even the acceptance rate is 22%.

In case of not getting admission offer from Baruch college where should I go.
Which of these Cal State Universities have best program in Finance.

PS: I'm transferring from Seattle, WA (tired of rainy weather)

Baruch is rather easy to get in to if you have either average or a little above average SAT scores. It’s just that many people with LOW scores apply, so they turn them down, so the acceptance rate looks low.
And wow, cal seems awesome. i don’t know specificly which are better, but i hope you get into baruch :)

I can’t offer advice specifically on finance programs, but in general, they rank 1. Pomona 2. Long beach 3. Fullerton.

I live in fullerton (20-25 mins from pomona) and use to live in long beach. So I can offer some advice on the areas if you need that type of info.

Yes please.

I heard that Long Beach is little “ghetto” area. Is it true? I don’t want to study with/around thugs.

How is fullterton and ponoma? I heard fullerton has good finance program. Is it expensive city.

I think only choice that is left is Pomona or Fullerton

I personally love long beach. It’s a very diverse city with lots to do and of course the beach. Plenty of clubs, coffee shops, restaurants and bars as well and shops and Big business and a busy downtown area. But yes, there are definitely some areas that would be considered ghetto. It’s an older city so lots of character in the houses, apartments and studios, but in the ghetto neighborhoods they look run down. As I said, it’s diverse so there is lots of blacks, Hispanics and whites mixed as well as a large gay and lesbian population. Also, it’s LA county.
Fullerton is in Orange County and quite different. The university is in a nice neighborhood and right by the freeway. There are a lot of apartment complexes nearby as well as residential homes. It has a large Hispanic population, as do most areas in north Orange County. But those kind of stats you can look at online. There is downtown fullerton which is much different that downtown LB. in fullerton there are little restaurants and a bunch of bars which are infested with students thurs-Saturday nights. It’s on the border of Anaheim so is close to angel stadium, Disneyland and the Honda center ( big concerts). So lots to do. There are definitely areas that would be considered ghetto to some, but perp ably on par with any other college town. It’s about 30 mins from the beach and 30 mins from LA, so not a bad place to be.
I personally would have a hard time making a decision on Pomona. It’s an excellent school, but I would hate to live there. It’s out in what we call the inland empire or what the TV show “The OC” called the 909. It’s an hour from to the beach and 45 mins to LA. There is some stuff to do of course because its a college town and there is a cool music venue. But let me tell you it gets freakin hot out there. Lets say its sunny and 80 here, it would be 75 in LB and 95 in Pomona. But again, it’s an excellent school so if you are planning to engross yourself in your studies and live on or near campus then I’m sure you will be just fine.
I hope that helps a little. Anything else, feel free to ask.

Oh you asked about expense. Because there is a lot of older real estate in Long beach, it’s easier to find a more affordable apartment. They took a lot of old businesses and turned them into lofts, studios or regular apartments. So you’ll find a lot of cool little studios two blocks from the beach with wood floors and lots of character for $700-900. But you’ll also find much pricier stuff as well, especially in the apartment complexes or as you get away from downtown or the older parts. You can find affordable stuff in fullerton, but be cautious because as I said before it borders Anaheim, and Anaheim has some ghetto. If you want a one bedroom in a decent complex -$1200, studios $900-1000. Renting a room is much more affordable. Pomona is very similar unless you are willing live further out. Then it will be much cheaper. They have a lot of farm land with a a nasty cow ***** smell so don’t go to far out. Lol.

Thank you for your information SoCal79.

I don’t have a car, I ride a bike. Do you know which campus is close to downtown area.
Where would it be easy to use bikes as everyday transport. And where the public transport such as buses/subways developed? As I know in LA it’s not very convenient to use public transportation. And where is it cheap to live (apartments, food, etc…)

Long beach has amazing public transportation and portions of it are free. Downtown, aka its beach, and Belmont shore (all within a mile of each other) are walking/biking communities. I loved it, I rode my bike or used public transportation to and from work into downtown. But some people hate it. The reason being is you have some folks wearing a suite and tie, some students, some blue collar workers and some very lower class or possibly homeless riding the bus. Just depends on the time of day.
Fullerton is also pretty bike friendly. From CSUF to the heart of downtown fullerton is 3 miles. Easy bike ride and cheap cab ride home. Fullerton is also home to the train station. S you can access the metrolink or Amtrak. You can get from fullerton to LA for about $8 in less than an hour on the metrolink. I’ve never really had to use public transport in fullerton, but I would imagine its a bit more of a pain. Orange county’s public transit isn’t the best.
I know Pomona has a train station as well, but I don’t know much else about the ease of getting around.
