where to go for grade disputes?

i'm currently having a grade disputes with one of the professors.
i've already talked with the professor.

do you guys know where i should goto?

my advisor told me to first talk to the chair, and then goto Cornell Ombudsman's office, so i will eventually do that later. but i was wondering if anyone else had any experience going to ombudsman's for grade disputes.

the background goes as follows:

my friend and i worked on the same project in this class; he got A, i got B+…

i asked the prof what happened.

this is what prof said:

now, my friend today talked to the prof, and then the prof told him that he made a mistake in giving him A…

so much for grade disputes, but this whole thing sounds stupid. why did he say the difference was justified in the first place?

did you each submit your own project? more details please

we submitted the same project together.

project was 45%
quiz was 30%
individual was 25%

we had the exactly the same project grade and quiz grade. the only difference was individual which was based on contribution points, but i generally did more work (at least an equal amount of work) than him.

well since you said the prof said it was a mistake in A, then probably nothings wrong with your grade

I don’t think you have anything to dispute here. Your grade was correct, the mistake was made on your friend’s grade (are you still friends?).

when i first created this thread, i had no idea there was a grading mistake.
i made a second post after i heard back what happened.

In general, I’d contact the prof. He has the final say in grades. This is best done through an e-mail contact. It would also be good to have all your papers and projects and quizzes together. That way, you can show him hard copies for evidence of any mistakes. It’s also possible, he’ll take a look at the specific assignment to see if you didn’t get the grade you deserved.

Note: Unless there’s an extremely obvious mistake, it’s very difficult to get a final grade changed.

Annoy him enough and he’ll just lower your friend’s grade. No more complaints in that case.
