I'm having trouble deciding which school to go to, and as the deadline is in only five days, this is getting a bit nerve-wracking. I visited all the schools this past month, but am no more sure where I want to go than I was before.

Although I applied to "artsy" schools, I'm not a very artistic person (as in the way I dress, I mean). I'm not a big party person (I don't drink) but I'm very sociable. Musical theater, acting opportunities, and acapella groups are essential.

I'm interested in studying political science/international relations, and maybe education or drama, but all three seem to have classes in those fields.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

All good schools. Oberlin has strong international relations, lots of theater opportunities, including for students who are not majors, does some musical theater (winter term has seen Cabaret and Little Shop of Horrors among other recent productions; they just did Reefer Madness which was apparently great; I saw an astoundingly good production of Death of a Salesman last fall, with some student actors, a professor, and some alum…it was truly breathtaking), endless musical opportunities, including choral ones for non-conservatory students. Endless musical performances, of all kinds, on any given day, free…lots of great new music and jazz by student performers; rock musicians appear regularly at Oberlin. You can’t go wrong regarding the academic and extracurricular activities that interest you. Students who like Oberlin seem to love it. Forever.
But the final choice among these colleges will really have to be a combination of financial and “gut” considerations.

I was a politics major at Oberlin, and we have a great department (it includes international relations). It was the most popular major on campus last year. It’s one of the largest departments, so there are lots of classes to choose from, and there are also some amazing professors.

I have a daughter involved with theater at Wesleyan and they do not offer any musical theater. However, the theater department at Wes is of very high quality. I am not sure about theater at Oberlin as my younger daughter who will be attending this fall has yet to begin.

Studiomom, there are student-run musical theatre productions at Wesleyan. In fact, “In the Heights” was written and directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda while he was a student at Wes and just went on to win a bunch of Tony awards on Broadway.

Brandeis also has a lively musical theatre scene, but it is all student-run. If Oberlin has an actual musical theatre program, with faculty-directed productions, it is the only one of these three schools where that is the case.

no, Skie that’s not true. Yes, the UTC (undergraduate theater collective) is student-run, but the Brandeis Theater Company often puts on a musical. In 08-09, it was Saturday night [Saturday Night | 2008-09 Season | Brandeis Theater Company | Brandeis University](<a href=“Theater Arts Productions | Brandeis University”>Theater Arts Productions | Brandeis University) The 09-10 will be announced soon!

Thanks, Sulsk. Last time I investigated they were only doing musicals every 4-5 years. If they’ve increased the number, they’re surely making a lot of students happy!

Skie, Yes there are random student run musical theater productions at Wes (i.e. a highly experimental opera this past fall) but there musical theater training does not exist in the drama department. Daughter is graduating senior and highly involved.
