Where to go out to dinner while visiting CWRU

My son is going on a visit next weekend with his father. He is not sure about going to school in a city and I really want him to see what this area has to offer. They will be there early Sunday afternoon through Monday afternoon. Any suggestions on must sees for Sunday and a good place for dinner to get a good campus vibe? They are staying at a hotel on University Circle. Thanks

I’ve heard good things about L’Albatros Brasserie and Bar, and Accent Robata Grill. Both are adjacent to the CWRU campus. In addition, there are a wide variety of dining options available in the Little Italy neighborhood (primarily located on Mayfield Rd., which is within walking distance of CWRU).

University Circle and Little Italy are good “walking neighborhoods.” Check out the Cleveland Museum of Art. Great collection and it’s free! Good Luck!

There is also a great restaurant on campus, next to the Glidden House, called Sergio’s. I know–Italian with an apostrophe’ … but it was very good! In fact, Glidden House can’t be beat for an overnight visit to Case!

L’Albatross is a fairly upscale place. you will get looks if you are not dressed up. Here are my recommendations:

if you want to stay very close campus: Little Italy. Either trattoria, mama santas are two faves

if you want a small drive (~5 min) of campus but a common case student area, try coventry. specifically pacific east, which has very good sushi

a little further away (~10 min) you can get a cleveland staple and nationally known place, melt bar and grilled. Food is delicious and atmosphere is fun. Also about 10 minutes away is shaker square with fire, a delicious restaurant.

You can also head the opposite way and head downtown, but that is more young professional crowd with bars (which is amazing, but will not be recognized by your son until he’s a senior)

Etna is a really nice Sicilian restaurant in Little Italy. We had a great meal there. Blue Point Grill, which is in the warehouse district, is a really nice place with great food. It was fairly expensive but we had a really good meal there.

For a less expensive meal try Trattoria in Little Italy. Not fancy, good food. For breakfast be sure to go to Presti’s in Little Italy. The donuts are fabulous.

There is a local sports pub chain called The Winking Lizard. We had lunch at the one in Cleveland Heights. It was pub food but the prices are reasonable and it had a fun atmosphere.

Edited to add: Cleveland has great restaurants.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I will steer them towards Little Italy. I used to work in Cleveland and I want them to stay close to campus because it is such a nice area. I really want my son to like this school but I am keeping that to myself!

Best place bear campus By FAR is Mamma Santaa on Mayfield Rd in little Italy- I remember going there on suggestion during my first visit! It has great Italian food, a relaxed atmosphere, and quite inexpensive- a student favorite!!!

Mama Santa is amazing. Thanks JKRTIST.

Thanks all! Mama Santa is not open on Sunday so they went to Trattoria and said it was very good. They went to Presti’s this morning and I just got a text that said “Yummy!”

My son has campus tour and interview today, so far it is thumbs up, we’ll see what he has to say later. This from the kid who didn’t want to go to a college in a city. He really likes the campus. Fingers crossed.

I hope he nails the interview. Case and University Circle are so incredible.
