where to go...please give advice

I was waitlisted at Haverford and admissions just called me today to tell me that they are going to the waitlist. They asked me if I was still interested. Soooo I assume that everyone will know within the next week or so.

are you interested?

Yeah, I am. I'm going to Bowdoin now, but that's only because I hated Tufts. I got waitlisted almost everywhere else, and it'd be nice to have some options. The only snag is that my boyfriend is going to Haverford next year, and I'm not sure if it would be a good idea if we both went to the same school (assuming I get accepted, of course).

Geniusriki, I wish you only the best of luck. I hope to see you as a part of the Haverford class of '09 next year.

Aww, thank you! I hope I get in!

well they called you, seems like you're definitely a consideration. hope you sounded enthusiastic =]

all they said is "are you still interested?" ... wierd?

I didn't think it was that weird. Right after I was waitlisted, I sent them a letter telling them what I had been doing and that I was still interested. I sent it before a lot of schools released decisions, though, so it makes sense that they wanted to make sure I hadn't changed my mind. Plus, Haverford is so small that they can't have that many people on the wait list, so it wouldn't be a huge deal to call people. I thought it was really nice, and it seems pretty characteristic of the school to actually be involved like that.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if Haverford actually went to the wait list this year (the acceptance rate dropped to about 24% from 29% last year, we technically beat out Swat in selectivity this year). Last time I heard (May 3rd I think), Haverford had enrolled about 265 students into the Class of 2009. I think they're targeting a class of 313.

And, if any of you want to come visit Haverford this July or August...I'll be working as a tour guide in admissions :) Oh, and totally request Barclay Second South.

Mattastic, speaking of Barclay, I was wondering if you could talk about the dorm life there. Does the dorm have a specific personality (quiet, social, party/nonparty dorm, etc.)? I stayed in Gummere back in September and I really liked the camaraderie of it and the aspect of having single dorms, but was kind of distraught by some of the talk I heard about people consistently coming up drunk from parties and throwing up in bathrooms. As a nondrinker who likes quiet, I was wondering if the social scene in Barclay is a little tamer or if both dorms are pretty much the same. Since I really don't know anything about Barclay, any advice you give me about what it's like in terms of party traffic and the socializing there would be much appreciated.

Barclay is a quieter dorm than Gummere in general terms- although, I've seen my far share of random drunken people walking around my hallway on weekends. Unlike Barclay, Gummere has significant basement space that people tend to use for parties on weekends (with, at times, involves a lot of drinking). There's usually at least one event in Gummere basement every weekend--consequentially, making some of the bathrooms in the hallways near the basement door susceptible to sick partiers.

I personally like the atmosphere of Barclay- we have nice rooms (no cinderblock), nicer bathrooms, bigger hallways which are great for hallway conversations (with carpeting...woo!) and a close-knit social life. Barclay is also, by far, the most conveniently located dorm on campus- near the Science Center, Founders, the North Dorms, and the Dining Center. Seriously, nothing for freshman is better than Barclay in terms of location.

There are parties thrown in Barclay as well (individual hall parties, or events like Barclay Block Party @ haverfest). But, certainly not as much activity as Gummere. I prefer Barclay (and I'm doing Customs next year on Second South). My Gummere friends prefer Gummere (for the most part at least). And my apartment friends love the apartments. It's more up to you really.

Thanks, for all of the advice, Mattastic! Barclay sounds like an amazing dorm. If I have a strong preference toward Barclay, how should I make Haverford aware of this? Also, how good is Haverford at honoring people's requests for dorms?

Mattastic, would you say that the majority of freshman rooms in Barclay and Gummere are singles? Whats the likelihood of getting a single? I know Haverford claims that their housing assignments are completely random, but is there any way to make your preferences known and any chance of getting them considered by housing?

I think the Housing Application has a short section where you can write a paragraph essay or so about yourself....and I vaguely remember ending it with---- P.S. I want to live in Barclay. Something subtle like that might work :)

Gummere is ALL singles next year (there were a select few doubles this year). Barclay is triples (3 interconnected singles) and doubles.

Thanks again for all of your advice, Mattastic. You've been great. I'll definitely make sure and use such "subtlety" on my housing form ;)

so there's 40 spots in haverford's class? when will kids on wait list find out? how many kids accepted spots on wait list? any info would be great, thanks!

wow that's a lot. .. why so many? did a lot of people turn it down?

Well, that was of about May 3...only 2 days after the postmark deadline for accepting/rejecting the offer of admission. I'd imagine that there were a number of letters still floating around the postal service at that point.

H'ford has averaged only a handful of admits from its waiting list over the last five years, and the admissions staff did not expect much of a departure from that experience this year. I believe the target size for the freshman class is under 300, perhaps 290, owing to the slightly larger than expected freshman class last fall.

And Barclay (my freshman year home) is a terrific dorm. But H'ford dorms really do not maintain a distinctive personality the way they might at other campuses. All the dorms on campus are high quality.

i think the classes are supposed to be 315, but not positive
