where to go with awkward 1900SAT/28ACT

I feel like top schools cater to the 2000-2100+ range, while lower schools cater to the 1500-1800 range. Are there any really good schools that will accept an applicant with a 1900 SAT or 28 ACT?

Any recommendations are GREATLY appreciated!! :)

DD2 wants a prevet track, and with comparable credentials, she’s got EAed to bunch of schools in the caliber of Penn State, Purdue, U Missouri, Kansas & Wash State, Colorado …
Maybe no elites, but certainly a lot of what we consider are solid schools that we can call “great” as a fit for her.

Shoot, there are all kinds of schools where you would be admitted with those statistics. Avail yourself of the copious data out there to find a school where your stats are toward the top for admitted students in the middle 50 percent. You don’t mention any preferences with regard to size, indicate how big a factor financing is or stipulate what you mean by “really good”–all of which could help people point you toward some possibilities. You might get some ideas from the U.S. News list of A+ schools for B+ students (which lists terrific schools for students with good but not foundation-rocking grades and/or test scores).

GPA, difficulty of classes and extracurriculars are key - you may want to post more details since test scores are just a part of the picture. Even top schools accept some students with 28 ACTs/1900 SATs, if everything else is in order.

Life is tough when all you have available for college choices are 2nd tier lower places like…

Lafayette College
Rhodes College
University of Rochester
University of Minnesota

Overbrook99,

My son had similar SAT scores the first time around (he improved by 300 points after good tutoring, showing how bogus the SAT is) and so we looked at options in your SAT range. I assume due to the “awkwardness” of the SAT scores that the rest of your profile exceeds these scores. If so, here are some options re LACs – Middlebury and Bowdoin (hard to get in, but do not look at SATs), Macalester, Lehigh, Lafayette (nothing 2d tier about it), Wittenberg, Denison, Kenyon, Hampshire (school I wish I could interest my son in), and Reed (less attention paid to SATs if you write a really good essay). If you have a technological bent, try Case Western, Rochester Institute of Technology, RPI, and Rose Hulman. Wake Forest is a medium sized school that does not look at SATs, and NYU is a large school that is SAT optional if you submit three APs. Finally, some others are U Rochester (again not 2d tier), and any Cal state schools not named Berkeley or UCLA if you are out of state and can afford 50K tuition (in my view, UCSD and UCSB are best bets here). A few low reaches: Wisconsin, Southern Cal, and U Richmond.

Good luck. You have many good options.

That’s the average ACT score for BYU, which is cheap and highly respected, as long as you’re willing to follow the honor code.

I’ve applied to Villanova EA as a legacy applicant (my cousin attended for undergrad and law school). I’m a white, upper-middle class male from southern NJ. Thanks in advance!

Haystack, Lafayette and Rochester are by no means second tear schools, but I appreciate the suggestions.
Muckdogs, I’ve looked into Bowdoin because of the SAT optional thing, but I’m not sure about the location. I was going to apply to lehigh but didn’t, after visiting (I didn’t like Bethlehem). I’m also looking into applying to Lafayette, and I’ve already applied to NYU. I guess I just feel like my scores are on the lower side for these schools.

And no, I’m not interested in Brigham.

Are there any really good schools that will accept an applicant with a 1900 SAT or 28 ACT?

Yes many.

However, that score can be in the “gray area” when it comes to aid. The schools that give the best aid are often out of reach. And, mid-tiers that give large merit scholarships often require higher scores.

NYU gives little aid…and no merit for your stats. OOS publics will be difficult if you need aid.

What is your budget? How much will your parents pay each year? That answer will likely determine where you’ll go.

Did I overlook what your major will be?

BTW…I don’t know if having a cousin who graduated counts as a legacy…Legacies are usually children/grandchildren.

you have nice credentials, i’d say you could get into almost all mid-tier schools, wouldnt hurt to try some easier ivies like cornell.

Overbrook 99,

Villlanova is a nice choice for EA–pretty campus, great area, and nice student facilities. You may be a little low re SATs for some of the schools mentioned on this thread, but your EC’s and GPA are really good. As I tell my son, it does not matter what schools defer/reject you if you get into one you really love. So, once you have a few safeties, follow your heart and take a few shots.

Some other ideas if you want to stay in the East–Rutgers honors, Ursinus, Goucher, (beautiful campus in suburban area of north of Baltimore with mandatory SA and good study abroad; also with your qualifications, it would not surprise me if you received a fair amount of money from them), and again U Richmond (beautiful campus, loads of money, rising reputation).

mom2collegekids: villanova counts cousins as legacies. i, too, thought it was strange at first, but i am not going to challenge it lol. if it helps, ill be grateful.

^^^

Ok…good!

What’s your budget? How much will your parents pay?

What are your financial safeties? These are the schools that you LIKE, have your major, you’ll be accepted to…AND…you know FOR SURE that you have ALL costs covered.

*while lower schools cater to the 1500-1800 range. *

I’m not sure what schools you’re talking about here. But there are many schools that accept your stats that do not cater to the 1500-1800 range…especially in the more academically challenging majors.

What is your major?

my parents make ~160, so they’ll be able to cover 30 a year, but financial aid will be nice. ive been accepted to rutgers, and have applied to tcnj (safeties). i’ll major in biochem, biology, neuroscience, or psych.

i also want a relativity small-medium sized school.
i’ve already applied to nova EA, penn ED (rejected but expected), rutgers, tcnj, nyu, and bc. i still have to apply to hopkins and haverford (bit of a reach). i’m considering adding lafayette.

With an income of 160K the only place you’d get FA is Harvard (unless you have siblings in college).

I have a brother in college. Hopefully that helps.

Take a look at Dickinson. Test-optional, which is great for you as you clearly don’t test anywhere NEAR where you perform academically. Might even be a safety for you, since your test scores are your major problem. And they value service, which you clearly also value. Great LAC, very global in their approach. Great little town.

Take a look at Wheaton College (MA), LAC, about 1550 students.
