Pittsburgh has a huge hockey culture (http://shorthandedbreakaway.com/2009/07/08/pittsburgh-is-the-new-hockeytown/), just not college hockey. It was just ranked as the number one hockey fans in the country by Forbes (http://www.wpxi.com/sports/22007762/detail.html). Pitt does have a couple of club teams (see http://www.pitthockey.com/) and Robert Morris has a D1 team in the city, but it doesn’t have that college hockey thing that is going on in Boston.

If you are interested in school spirit, I don’t think you’ll be able to find an equivalent at a school that doesn’t have a BCS-level athletics department, which is what you’ll find at Pitt. Pitt will be ranked around 15th to start the football season this fall and will be in the top 10 in basketball. Both finished in the top 20 this past year and right now Pitt baseball is ranked 24th (by college baseball news).
