where to start?

hi, i am an information systems major at virginia tech. i just finished by freshman year. I was wondering what kind of internships I should look for next summer and what are some good recruiting firms? I don't think I will have learnt much relevant to my major of interest. I will be taking Java next semester, and I should be pretty adept at MS office. I dont have any other experience besides some high school summer jobs. will it be hard for me to get any offers? i have a good gpa aswell

Look for large corporations close to where you live. Apply to their information technology departments and/or human resource departments and ask about internships. Generally, these come open as early as January (and usually around March) for the summer, so if you are just looking now, you may be too late. But there might still be a few.

Also, make sure you network with your friends/acquaintances. That is, ask people you know, your parents know, your professors, your relatives, parents' friends, etc. if they know about open jobs/internships and let them know you are looking for work. Something like 60% to 80% of jobs are obtained/located in this manner.

Oh, and the corporations you should be looking for are ones that are growing. These are the ones that use internships to locate possible future employees and/or do fill-in work when their people go on vacation. Companies in financial difficulty or that are stagnant won't have internships to offer.

yea i am looking for internships for next summer although i don't know if i should do it next summer or the summer after that i.e after my junior year so that i will have atleast learnt something about information systems.
