Where to Stay for Campus Days'

Hi there!

I am an admitted student to the University of Michigan and I am visiting Ann Arbor for Campus Day sometime next month. I am 17 years old a.k.a underage so I was just wondering if there are any places I can stay? I am visiting alone and will be arriving via Detroit Metropolitan International Airport. Should I just camp out at some library? haha

Thanks! All feedback is greatly appreciated.

maybe you should contact the university and see if they can pair you up with a student there?
also, when did you get accepted?

got in through Early Action back in December; do you think there is an alternative to staying in some random dorm since I don’t think the university would permit this ): i’ll give them a call first thing tomorrow though

i would just not go… nothing special happens at campus days, I just got a t shirt

i’ve never been to michigan before so i at least wanna visit the campus, and campus day seemed like a good time to do so :/

any suggestions as to where i can stay?

camping at the library sounds fun haha.
im going to campus day too, but im going with my mom and staying at a hotel/motel, why wouldnt your parents go? :(

Agree, call the admissions and ask if there is someone you can overnight with. Make sure they understand that you are 17 and you are coming alone (no parents with you). Have you already figured out how to get from Detroit to Ann Arbor? If not, talk to them about that also.

If you’re curious about the University, I would definitely go. I can see umich being very helpful in finding you an empty dorm to stay in, just call them and explain the situation (that you are underage, flying in)

@MichiganGirl15: haha right? i don’t think the library is open 24 hours though ): i thought it’d be more convenient for me to go alone less confusion, cheaper airfare, etcetc – still trying to work everything out

@momofthreeboys/Bc2015: yea i’ll definitely call them, but on the Michigan website it said that people may not stay in the dorms for Campus Day, but their wording makes it sound like this applies to people who purely wants to stay at the dorms as an experience. I will call to clarify this later.

Thanks so much! Additional feedback from current students would be awesome

Campus day is a neat experience, especially if you aren’t familiar with Ann Arbor or the campus. If there is any way you can make it, you should do so. Definitely call admissions and see if there is anything they can help you arrange. You can’t be the only one who’s had this problem.

I’m not sure if there are any youth hostels in Ann Arbor, but perhaps if your parents contacted one of the B&Bs around town and explained the situation, that could work. On the accepted student/campus day site, I believe there is a link to accommodations. Follow it and start contacting the Bread&Breakfast instead of the hotels!
Alternately, maybe you could try to contact one of the frats and see if they have any guest space.

the duderstadt library is 24/7. I usually live there the day before a final when I am cramming a whole semester’s worth of stuff into my brain

You might want to check out [Inn at the League | University Unions | University of Michigan](<a href=“University Unions - Michigan University”>Inn at the Michigan League - University Unions)
You’d be staying in a University building for a University-sponsored event. I would call and explain why you are visiting and ask if they have special rates for accepted, prospective students.

Unfortunately I contacted Michigan, and they said that they were unable to offer university accommodations for visiting students for Campus Day. Also, I have to be at least 21 to check in at all the surrounding hotels (not a big surprise). I guess I might have to blow another couple of hundred dollars for my parents to go along. hahaha ):

EDIT: @kmccrindle: still have not contacted the Bed&Breakfast, will do so first asap but I would think they would uphold the same terms as the hotels?

I would have your parents contact one of the local hotels directly and explain the situation. I stayed at the Marriott Courtyard in Ann Arbor by myself and I was supposed to be 21, but my parents called the hotel, and they said it would be fine if i stayed there one night. The only issue for you would be finding a way to get to campus, but you could also try having your parents call one of the hotels that a campus day bus goes to.

hey dude, I can check you into a hotel if you want. I am over 21. PM me.

actually apologies. I dont think I can do it. I dont want my credit card to be on the hook for incidentals. sorry

OP, if your parents call Four Points Sheraton Ann Arbor and explain the situation, and if they let you stay, they have a free shuttle that will take you to campus.
The reason the bed & breakfast folks might make an exception is because in most cases they live there too, so you’re not exactly likely to trash the place. I’m sure if you found the right one they’d make an exception.

really… if money is an issue for your family it is not worth it to do everything u r planning to do

Do you know any students from your high schoold who are at UMich? Most kids I know would be willing to let you crash on their couch or floor for a night.
