Where to stay-Pace

We are going to Pace for auditions in January. We are thinking of taking the train (from upstate NY) into the city. Does anyone recommend any of the hotels near Pace? I've been looking at the Hampton & Best Western online, just thought I'd ask here.

Pace is right near the newly expanded Fulton Street subway station, which is where the 9/11 Memorial is. It’s only about 6 subway stops from midtown so you could really stay there too. I would just try to stay close to one of the subway lines that goes directly to Fulton street without having to take a crosstown line/transfer.

We always stay at the Milburn Hotel in NYC. It’s not close to Pace, but is in a really nice neighborhood (UWS 79th and Broadway) near the park and Zabars and the Fairway market, an easy train ride downtown (it’s the west side line, it crosses to the east side downtown and has a Fulton St stop, maybe half an hour, less if you get the express), and you can generally get a nice room with a fridge and a kitchen for around $200 a night. There’s free breakfast and free WIFI and a very small gym (though really, just go for a run or a walk in the Park). You can easily walk to Broadway or Lincoln Center from it if you’re going to see a show.

Have you ever used airbnb? Great website

I’m in NY for work a few times each quarter, and I prefer to stay in midtown, close to theater and the TKTS booth. I like a good gym, so I prefer Le Parker Meridien or the Crown Plaza Times Square, which both have access to full health clubs, as well as the Palace, which has a good gym and often has good rates yet is a 4-5 star hotel. Whatever you do, avoid the Grand Hyatt; it’s priced like the Palace for a small room and poor service. Weekend rates are generally pretty good in NY (compared to weekdays), and down by Pace, weekend rates typically are even better than midtown. My daughter has her Pace and NYU dance auditions the same weekend in February, so we’ll stay in midtown and hopefully catch a show.

There are issues with short term rentals in NYC. They are illegal unless a resident is also staying there at the time. Be careful with these.

Agree with Saratogamom about the Crowne Plaza. Nice hotel, good facilities, good service, a nice lobby bar. Great location and you can get anywhere easily.

Use Hotwire and go for the Financial District. Just got a room at a great boutique hotel, (3 and 1/2 stars) a few blocks from Grand Central Station (thus lots of subway connections everywhere, including near Pace) for $99 dollars with a 90% recommendation. My daughter’s NYU dorm is 8 blocks from Pace, and she says this is a great location!

Grand Central is a good location but it’s in midtown, not the financial district.

The Millenium Hilton is probably the closest nice hotel to Pace but be advised, the financial district clears out at night and it is very quiet. Not everyone is comfortable walking around there after dark. If you’re including other activities while you’re in the city, midtown is a better option, especially if you’re seeing a show.

I have stayed in the Best Western in the Seaport when in town for an event at Pace, and thought it was very nice. Walking distance to Pace, quite a few restaurants nearby. This was before Sandy, and I have not been down that way recently, so I am not sure exactly what is down there now.

I have also stayed at the Park 79 Hotel uptown. Not particularly close to Pace, but not too far from the subway, and in a nice part of the city with lots of shops and restaurants. The rooms are small but beds are comfortable, and rooms are nice. If you go this route make sure you book a room with the bathroom, since there are a few less expensive rooms that share a bathroom on the hall.

^ the seaport is undergoing a slow, but lovely, renovation since Sandy. It was seriously damaged, but there are some great things happening in the warmer months, which make it a very nice spot to relax for Pace students as it is very close. They set up a nice spot for evening movies and outdoor concerts from about May-October , and there is a fantastic lane off terrific culinary booths (interesting cuisine-not the typical carnival stuff), to represent the restaurants that were damaged. Some shops have re-opened, but the best thing is there is a TKTS booth there that almost never develops a line like the TS location and offers the identical shows. Things around Pace have improved at night. More restaurants are open at night and when my child was very seriously considering them we made several visits and did not feel uncomfortable walking around at night, which was a change from a couple of years earlier. While you are there, see if you can tour the other dorm that allows freshmen. I’ve forgotten the name but it is actually even closer to the new theatre building AND while they tend to encourage freshmen to live in Maria’s Tower, the other dorm is much nicer and also has upper-classmen, and is considered a little “calmer”, so depending in your child’s preferences, it might be a good choice.

My S is a sophomore MT at Pace. I usually use Hotwire and look for 3 to 3.5 stars in Financial District - using the find out the hotel after you book rates. I have gotten the Club Quarters Wall St., Holiday Inn Express Wall St and Holiday Inn Wall Street this way - all good hotels, but rooms are small. Usually paid $110-$125/night. Last May I did book the Best Western Seaport directly since I wasn’t seeing any great deals on Hotwire. There is still construction going on in the area but the hotel was fine and the rooms quite large. I know another Pace mom that usually stays at the Hampton Inn Seaport and likes that as well.

^ ^ Yes to my friend MTSD322 and fellow Pace Mom. I usually stay at Hampton Inn Seaport and there are usually other auditioners or Pace folks there on busy Pace weekends. It is a short walk from Pace and the Fulton St. subway. (Convenient for running back for lost items and/or a quick rest.) I’ve stayed at a few of the same places as MTSD322 also - all are fine and close. Break a leg!

ON Hotwire, midtown is considered part of the financial District . . .

Just checked to see if anything has changed on Hotwire. Using the Secret Hot Rate Hotels tab - click on the areas link and select the “Downtown-Soho-Financial Distict” option. My experience over the last two years when we select 3-3.5 stars is that we have always ended up in the Financial District at the hotels mentioned before. Not sure if something has changed because there are a couple of separate midtown options yu can select - but as Christie2 mentioned - it is an easy subway ride if you end up in midtown.
