Which hotels and areas are best to stay to visit AU for preview day Tuesday? Paperwork said parking will be limited so to take transit. Thanks!
The closest Metro stop to AU is Tenleytown (on the Red line), and AU runs continuous shuttle buses between the stop and the campus. So any DC hotel that is walkable to a Metro station will work (all the lines interconnect). Catholic U is also on the Red line, but kind of on the other side of town–figure a 30 minute Metro ride between the two schools.
When our D was at AU, our favorite hotel was the Embassy Suites at the Chevy Chase Pavilion, which has the Friendship Heights Metro station right in the basement, just one stop from Tenleytown (or a brief Uber ride to AU if you want to avoid the Metro altogether). There’s also a bus that runs from outside the hotel right to AU–check the WMATA website’s trip planner function for details). But the hotel, while lovely, is not cheap, and it seems to raise prices at times when AU is busy. You can save some money by staying further out on the Red line, i.e. Bethesda or beyond. (Don’t plan on relying on DC taxis when leaving the campus–they are very hard to find in the AU area and even when you call for one, they often don’t come. If you haven’t already downloaded the Uber app, now is the time to do so!)
@MommaJ Thank you…we are heading out right now. That one was booked so staying at Embassey Georgetown. Thanks for the info on the redline, checking out maps while hubby drives. .
