The UF website seems to indicate 2 places on campus to stay. One, in a student union building in the middle of the campus and another at a Hilton also on the campus, at the perimeter. Any recommendations for an overnight campus visit for an admitted freshman? We will be flying in and not renting a car, unless you think it advisable.

The rooms on campus are probably competitive to get. I don’t go to UF, but I did take a tour of the school. My family and I stayed at a hotel nearby (maybe about a mile away). Hotels directly on top of the campus will be very expensive.

Hmm. The fact that you are not renting a car makes me think that staying in a more expensive place might be much more convenient. However, if you don’t mind walking a little bit, staying at a hotel and walking for 15 minutes will save money if you don’t mind it.

I loved staying at the hotel in the reitz union for my daughter’s preview. I think it was about $80-90 per night, but well worth it. The room was very nice with a balcony. I stepped out on the balcony after a full day of parent orientation, and the view took my breath away. I could see the campanile, the stadium and all over campus----lots of twinkling lights and absolutely beautiful. Lots of other fellow “preview” parents were staying there, and we talked. Also, there was an adequate continental breakfast set up off the hallway on my floor. I plan to stay this year when my son goes up.

Oh, $80-90, not bad. So you managed to get a room? No alumni preference or anything? Hmm, maybe I should have done that.

How far is the airport? I don’t need a car, do I, Jankrav?

A bunch of the local hotels have a shuttle service to campus, I believe. There are a few within walking distance as well.

You’ll definitely need some sort of transportation to get to/from the airport, as it’s about 5 miles away. But depending on what hotel you stay at they may have a service for that as well.

Thank you for the info everyone.

if you are on a budget then anywhere south of archer road on 13th street will work.

I would personally recommend the Reitz Union Hotel if you’re not gonna have a car (Though Gainesville airport is very far from campus, so you’d need to arrange some form of transport). It’s 100 bucks a night so long as you’re not coming during graduation or Football Season. It’s smack dab in the center of campus, so you’ll definitely maximize your ability to see everything if you stay there.

The Hilton is at the edge of campus, but people who don’t know UF don’t realize how far that is. UF truely has a mammoth campus, and the side that the hilton is on has nothing that will interest you for several miles (The SouthWest Rec Center is right on the outskirts, then just lots of physical plant buildings and support buildings, it’s probably at least 3 miles till you get into where the classrooms are, maybe an hour walk)

Already booked Reitz! Thanks for the advice!

Reitz Union would be my first choice, but the Hilton is OK, too. There is a bus that runs every 15 minutes between the center of campus from the park and the ride lot right next to the Hilton.
