We plan to visit Georgetown in late July/early August. We will be attending AU's Preview Day on August 2nd as well. Where should we stay? Is it easiest to take cabs? My understanding is that there really isn't a convenient metro station for either school, but I am not sure! Trying to figure out if we should stay near one of the schools or try to split the difference between them distance-wise?

I recommend staying closer to Georgetown. AU is quite residential and Georgetown has a lot of action and activity. You are correct, there are no close Metro stations to either school. There are hotels on Wisconsin and M Street. We stay across from GU in Rosslyn. An easy walk over the Key Bridge over to Georgetown. Good luck. I am sure you will enjoy both schools.

Georgetown would definitely be a more engaging and interesting place to stay, if you were choosing to be within walking distance of one or the other. Actually, I can’t really think of any hotels within walking distance of AU. I would suggest either staying in the Georgetown neighborhood or getting a hotel somewhere on the Red Line of the Metro (Dupont, Woodley Park, Farragut, Metro Center, Chinatown, etc.). Georgetown runs regular shuttle buses to campus during the week from the corner of 20th & Massachusetts, right near the Q Street entrance to Dupont Circle metro. AU runs regular shuttles from the Tenleytown metro. Both are on the Red Line.

I am more familiar with Georgetown University but if you’d like to stay somewhere in between the two campuses, take a look at Savoy Suites on Wisconsin Ave. The hotels right in Georgetown tend to be pricey. If you’d prefer to be closer to Georgetown University, try the Key Bridge Marriott, Holiday Inn or Le Meridien which are in Arlington, a 10-minute walk to campus over the Key Bridge and a 10-minute walk to the Rosslyn Metro station in the other direction.

There are trade-offs with renting a car. You have to pay for parking at most hotels and it can be a bit daunting to drive around Georgetown and DC if you’re not used to it. Taking cabs and walking will give you more flexibility and offer you a taste of what it’s like to live in the area. The Georgetown neighborhood is very busy and vibrant, filled with stores and restaurants. Enjoy your trip.

That’s where we stayed during our visit this spring. It was well-priced compared to the other Georgetown options, and one of the dining halls is just a half-block away. The location was really convenient.
