Where to stay?

I am revisiting Vandy with my daughter in April. My first time to Nashville; her second. Could someone suggest an inexpensive hotel option close to campus. I do not need anything fancy--just internet capability and a short walk to the school as I am not going to rent a car.

I think the most underrated place is Extended Stay America (its walking distance/modern rooms/and cheap).

I got some good deals at Courtyard by Marriott on Expedia. I do suggest booking for Move in weekend (inflated pricing at all hotels around Vandy) and for Parents Weekend asap.

For an inexpensive close to campus option look up the Scarritt-Bennett center. It’s a closed college turned into a conference center one block from Vandy commons. The grounds and buildings are beautiful. The rooms are spartan dorm rooms with no frills but the price is right. Last year I stayed it was $50 for a single and $100 for a double with free parking and you can walk to campus (its also in a safe area next to campus).

Thanks, everyone!

I just returned from a weekend visit (my son’s a freshman) and have to say how pleasantly surprised I was with the Hilton Garden Inn Vanderbilt. I’ve stayed a number of times at the nicer (and pricier) hotels near Vandy like the Marriott and Loews, but there was limited availability at the last minute so we went with the Hilton Garden Inn.

It was great–clean, basic rooms, free coffee, cookies and fruit out during the day and most importantly, the staff was excellent and very accommodating. They also told me about the Vanderbilt Parents’ Club…if you join and stay at this hotel or the new Hilton owned-Homewood Suites or the Home2Suites (all near Vandy), you get 15% off your stay. Could be helpful if she decides to attend and there’ll be more frequent visits :).

Sometimes the walkable hotels are overbooked and overpriced just because of conventions. If so, consider the hotels in Brentwood, and keep looking for openings in the hotels adjoining campus. Hotels at Opryland are also sometimes better price points…read up at Tripadvisor. There are also a couple of B&Bs that can be reasonable…one near Music Row, and two in Hillsboro Village…Linden has one I know a block from a house we used to rent in the 80s. Hilton Garden Inn became my fave (2 Queen beds option…but alas no breakfast included) but the Hampton Suites Elliston place has no parking fees and breakfast included near The Parthenon. I generally booked at the least expensive option off West End or off of the Division area near the Law School and closer to the Commons.

The other Hampton Inn is fine too.

I have stayed at both Hampton Inns near campus when visiting Vanderbilt. I did like the one at Elliston Place better. Newer and really nice walking distance from campus. Enjoy your visit!

Scarritt-Bennett is an experience. It’s very basic. Like staying in a small dorm room. I think we paid $60 for a double (two single beds) in Sept. People are really nice there. But get a hotel room unless you’re on a tight budget.

I like both Hamptons near campus, as well as the Holiday Inn Select. All are easy walking distance, with free parking. The HI has a bar that has music - always fun to hear the locals sing (they are good!).
