Where to transfer?

I am currently a freshman at Rutgers University
Race: African American
MY HS GPA: 3.0 ( Top 50 high school in the nation)
ACT with writing: 26
SAT : Writing:580 Math: 520 English:660
SAT 2: Lit: 650 Hist: 560
College extracurriculars: French Club, Spanish Club, School Newspaper, Job at tutoring center helping underprivileged children
College GPA: First semester estimate 3.8
Major: English Literature

I plan to transfer for the fall semester of 2009. What schools out of the list below do I have a chance at getting into? Any suggestions of schools I should apply to?

NYU ( 31% transfer acceptance rate)( applied before and got denied)
Brown (28% transfer acceptance rate)
UPenn ( 14% transfer acceptance rate)
Johns Hopkins University ( 16% transfer acceptance rate)

Really hard to guesstimate chances (which I usually don’t do anyway, but… would like to help you create a good list). The SAT scores are low for all of the schools you list. The college GPA is excellent. The African American tip factor… I don’t know how to guage.

I would say that, if you are fine with Rutgers as a place to continue if you don’t get into the 4 listed, just go for it. Follow all guidance from the Transfer Admissions 101 thread, especially wrt essays and prof recs.

If you do NOT want to stay at Rutgers, you likely need some safer schools on your list.

As to which schools to suggest, we would need to know your criteria - location, size, atmosphere, etc.

Uh, Brown’s transfer rate is NOT 28%

Brown, UPenn, and John Hopkins will all look at your High School record if you’ve completed only one semester of college, so if you don’t get a 4.0(you’re estimating a 3.8) you really don’t have much of a chance

NYU you have an outside chance at though
