Where/when do I tell a college that I'm not going there?

I've been accepted to a number of colleges, and have already eliminated a few of them as potential choices. However, I can't seem to find out where exactly I am supposed to notify these colleges that I am will not be attending. Should I tell them now, and if so, where can I find the information to find the place to tell them, or should I just let the May 1 deadline pass?

Thanks.

You could let the deadline pass, but it's admissions etiquette to withdraw. If you don't tell them they don't know if there are extra spots to pull from the waitlist (if they under recruited).

I think it's different for some colleges... but most have instructions in the e-mails for you to reply with WITHDRAW in the subject or something...

Have you eliminated places you've been accepted or places you applied?

It's helpful to your fellow applicants to let colleges know you won't be attending, so that those on waitlists have the best shot at being invited by their first choices before they feel pressured into accepting at their second choices.

in agreeing with the original poster, i just wanted to add another question. So do you have to notify them by mail? or is email too detatched?
i got accepted into 5 unis so far with 2 more decisions to come and i only applied to 7 unis all together. I didn't expect to get accepted into so many, and since i just got accepted into the uni i really wanted to go to, i need to tell others that i'm not going to attend their unis. So how do i do that??

cheers guys

st.g.i.dragons - In all my acceptance letters there's been a reply form to mark saying if I'll attend or not. Did you not get those?

"or is email too detatched?"

They really don't care; just let them know. But the reply card should have been there.

I have eliminated some from both.

For the schools that have the online decision status, you can reply online if applicable.
Or you can send the admissions office a mail saying you won't be able to attend.
