Where will be good to apply?

@ThatMathySciGirl Haha I know, I mean SoCal :slight_smile: Should be a match.

Are you attending there this fall? You got a scholarship? How big was it, and did you get it just for applying before the deadline? Thanks! @Lilliana330‌

So I’d like opinions concerning my new list–anything I should change or reconsider?

Reach schools: Stanford, Cornell, Georgia Tech (mostly with President’s Scholarship), Princeton, MIT
*where should I apply EA/SCEA–Stanford, Princeton, or MIT?
Match schools: UVa, maybe Bryn Mawr or Haverford 4+1 with UPenn (not sure if this would be for me)
*any other match schools I should look at? other than USoCal
Safety schools (academically speaking, at least): Clemson, Lehigh, VT, Lafayette, UF (is UF considered a safety for me with its erratic admissions process?)

After my upcoming visits, the list may change as well.

USC = University of Southern California. Don’t let those delusional people down in Columbia, SC tell you that it’s their school :)

@ThatMathySciGirl Well they’re not automatic
They’re pretty competitive actually, only top 2% of applicants are selected to interview. However, it is definitely worth a shot; apply by Dec. 1st to be considered. I got full tuition; I have no idea how, actually, since my test scores weren’t up to the ideal. I think it was because I applied as a chemistry major; I looked up the majors for last year’s graduating class -out of ~4000 students, only 10 got a chem degree. Not very popular for some reason. This is where niches come in. One year, the school will need more tuba players, but next year they might need more swimmers. It’s kinda like HYPS admissions -a lot of luck/randomness involved. Good luck though!

By the way, did you take the PSAT? If you’re a NMF, you’d automatically get half tuition off if you’re admitted (which you most likely will). Also, they meet 100% of need, so check out the net price calc.

HYPS-like schools have better aid, but in case those don’t happen: http://www.usc.edu/admission/fa/applying_receiving/npc/

If you have a high EFC, merit elsewhere will be better than SC financial aid. Do apply for merit at SC though!

@Lilliana330‌ thank you! I didn’t mean they were automatic, I was instead curious as to whether there was a separate application (came out a bit wrong). Congrats on your scholarship! I have a chance at being a NMF.

@ThatMathySciGirl Oh nope, just make sure your Common App, supplement, and Letters of Rec are in by December 1st  Thanks :stuck_out_tongue: Well, if you get NMF, that’s half tuition off, although it might get you more $$$ at some other schools

@Lilliana330‌ thanks for all the great info! Any more comments/suggestions concerning my list?

I think I’ve narrowed it down to Princeton for SCEA or Stanford for SCEA. Both of the schools fit me in different ways
any opinions? I still might end up doing MIT, but idk if MIT fits me
:(

Johns Hopkins
? ;)

So far my list is, in order of descending importance:
MIT
Georgia Tech (President’s Scholarship Program is my first choice)
Virginia Tech (would need merit aid)
Cornell
UVA (Jefferson Scholarship )
University of Florida (in-state)
Harvard
North Carolina State University
[Princeton]

I want to do chemical/environmental/biological systems engineering with a focus on water quality. Where are good schools for match/safety? Thanks!

What was your PSAT
are you a likely NMSF?

My younger son graduated with a ChemEngg degree from Bama.

If you will NOT be a NMF, then Bama would give you free tuition plus 2500 per year for eng’g
value of about $110,000

If you will be a NMF, then Bama would give you a LOT more.

I might be NMF @mom2collegekids‌ can’t count on it. In FL, cutoff last year was 214 for SF. The averages for FL were lower this year than last year, so it isn’t really predicted to go up. However, I am in a precarious situation since I got a 214 (went down from sophomore to junior year–must have really stressed out :frowning: )

OP - I like your list! I think you will like Lehigh. Also, you cannot go wrong with Calhoun Honors at Clemson. Everyone I know who attends Clemson absolutely loves it!

Good luck with your National Scholars Program application!

Thanks @Overtheedge‌ !! I’ve got all my fingers and toes crossed for that. It would make any doubts I have about Clemson dissolve entirely. Do you think I will like Lehigh based on reading my posts? Thanks!

For some reason, I group Cornell, Clemson, and VT in my mind, and MIT and GT in my mind. Is this at all fair? I mean clearly Cornell is heads above the latter two, but there’s just something similar concerning the vibe. I haven’t been to Cornell yet, so maybe I’m wayyyyyy off.

@Overtheedge‌ do you know what kind of shot I’d have at the scholarship?
