We have begun hearing where students will be this fall semester. However, the postings are spread among different threads, so I thought I would start a thread just so we know that everyone has settle in for the semester. I know that Concerneddad's son is working with TEMS getting the education of his life. Unfortunately, it looks like it will be awhile before the rest of the students can return to help.

My son will be attending SMU this semester. The folks at SMU were absolutely wonderful. There were students there from Tulane, Loyola, Xavier, Dillard and UNO there. All of them, upper classmen and freshmen alike expressed a strong desire to return to New Orleans and their college homes. My son has been so overwhelmed and sad this week. The prospect of getting back to studies again has lifted a great deal of the cloud. I hope this will help him pass the time until he returns to NO.

S will be at Bates College. They, too, have been wonderful. Paperwork was 1/2 page done by fax today. They are having a "mini-Orientation" on Sunday, classes start on Monday. It has all been so quick and informal that I am feeling the need for something concrete and on paper to rest totally easy, as they haven't given us the exact time of the mini-Orientation yet. But they have done all of this in 24 hours!

They gave him a weblink to start looking at courses he might want and believe they will have a few dorm spots, or space in off-campus college-owned buildings typically used for visiting profs, and have had offers from faculty families etc.

Off to Willamette, even further from home than Tulane is. DD really (REALLY) did not want to stay home and volunteer or go to a local college. The folks at Willamette, John Carroll (a Jesuit university in Cleveland), Allegheny in PA and Lake Erie in OH were all just incredibly available, kind, and financially helpful. Her high school college office did a terrific job, too.

S is attending the University of Georgia, registering for classes and moving into the dorm on Tuesday.

UGA has been really wonderful....every contact they gave me was the head of a department. They want these kids to be streamlined into the university with absolutely no red tape. He will room in a freshman dorm with a UGA student who apparently eagerly volunteered to host a hurricane student. Right across the hall will be another Tulane student, also "hosted" by a UGA student.

They are holding a special orientation, a special welcome reception, and in general are making life as easy as possible. No paperwork required so far, mainly because S had applied and been accepted previously. The biggest challenge is that classes already started 2 weeks ago. But even then, one of the Deans told me they are acutely aware of the challenges these kids face--not just physical relocation but an emotional relocation as well. I felt quite encouraged by the very personal treatment I believe he will receive.

He's really heartbroken over this loss of having the freshman experience in a city he's grown to love and a college he believes in. He still continues to watch the news constantly, worrying about what will become of NO.

curiouser - we, too, got that kind of high-level personal treatment. The "official" in charge of Tulane orphans at Bates is an Assistant or Associate Dean. But the call came to us directly from the Dean of Students, himself, who has made himself available by phone, email, fax - whatever. Really helps. The UGA approach sounds absolutely top-notch.

Our son will go to Cornell, where his DSA will be honored, or perhaps he won't pay tuition at all, depending on whether they go with the guidelines announced today (we had already paid the bill at Tulane.). They said to just show up there on Tuesday with as much documentation as we could--they understood that much of what he had was in New Orleans. They can't promise housing on campus but will help with finding something.

They are being extremely accommodating. Their attitude makes him feel that all will go very smoothly and easily for him. It's far away, but kind of nice because it's only an hour from his Dziadzi (that's Polish for Grandpa). Nice for me because I'll finally get to find out what all those recipes in the Moosewood cookbooks are SUPPOSED to taste like. A great new adventure!

ctymomteacher: Welcome to the Cornell Family (an alum here). I'm so sorry about all of your hardships and hope that your son's experience at Cornell is positive. Might I suggest that your son gets his own College Confidential username and start posting on the Cornell board. There are some great kids there, that I'm sure would be glad to take him under their wing(s).

D will attend University of Denver. So far they have 11 Tulane freshman. D's roommate will be another displaced Tulane student. They have been wonderful and worked hard to get us all the information. They are intially putting all of them in the same on campus apartment building until they find spaces in the freshman dorms. They are holding a special orientation just for them. I also wonder how many will end up going back to Tulane after settling in. Like some others she is attending her 2nd choice school. I am thankful for how helpful they have been. She starts Monday.

I don't agree with the assessment of SMU. Their initial response, when Columbia, American, UT-Austin and UT-Dallas had already said "come and we'll work out the details later," SMU said "sorry we're NOT accepting students but they sure gave the media a great story because they were housing the Tulane football team. When they finally announced they WOULD accept Tulane students from Dallas, my son got there 1 hour after they opened; he waited over 2 hours and was told "Sorry can't see anyone else today"---he was next in line! They said he COULD come back the next day to try to see about registering, but classes were quite full and they should expect no more than 1-2 classes and less than full-time status at that. Meanwhile, UT-Dallas had already enrolled kids, connected with them with major advisors, and helped make connections for parking, meeting professors, etc. After my son's face-to-face with SMU, he felt that he had been slapped down AGAIN...twice in a week...and he said that he'd rather just stay home and go to UT-D. So, he's taking 3-4 courses, the profs are meeting with him 1:1 and he has every intention to return to Tulane ASAP!!!

The strength and loyalty these young men and women have to Tulane is going to make their bond even stronger when they return to help rebuild Tulane and New Orleans! Roll-On Green Wave!

My son is looking to attend Northwestern, I hope their offer comes through, we should know on Tuesday. He is planning to take 2 or 3 classes and wants to work for Habitat 4 Humanity. He is trying to gather as many Chicago area Tulane students to join him in this endevor. He hopes to try and build a Tulane community here and learn skills they can bring back to Tulane and rebuild NOLA. NOLA may not be the same but it will be his New Orleans and he can say he helped put it back together. If anyone knows any Chicago area students please pass this along and they can contact me through this board. Thanks. Go Green Wave!

D enrolled at LSU.They offered her in-state tuition & she is sharing an apt. with a friend off campus. I think tuition is free for LA residents. (There was limited housing available as of Friday. But, they extended their deadline for displaced-student admission until Sept. 9th.) She wanted to stay in LA so she can help out when they are allowed back in NO. In the meantime, she has found opportunites to assist in the relief effort in Baton Rouge.

Dbasmom, I'm sorry that your impression of SMU was not the same. My son arrived Thursday afternoon and got his paper work. He went back Friday morning and was enrolled and had his books before noon. Son elected not to try UTD although it is a great school because they have been in school for so long already. I think we have to give these schools a little time. Frankly, they didn't have to do anything for us, but they did. They do have a responsibility to the students who are there not to overload the classes they are taking. Son got twelve hours, which is what he wanted, and I was hearing stories of upperclassmen being accommodated by penciling them in to full classes - which is what they get at Tulane.

I'm sorry that you felt so differently, and I know that your son will do great at UTD. It is an excellent school and truly a hidden gem.

I noticed that many of the displaced Tulane students will be taking less than a full load. Has anyone talked to their health insurance provider yet to make sure that they will be covered even though they will not be full-time students? It just occured to us today and we will have to wait until Tuesday or possibly sign up S for another class at out of pocket cost to us. Yikes, this is getting very expensive... travel home, replacing belongings, additional tuition and already paid the bill to Tulane too. Hate to complain, I know we are lucky but where will it end?

kburmeister, several friends reminded me that not only was health insurance an issue, but also auto insurance (student rates), and at least with our ins company--we'd lose the 10% of our homeowner's insurance value that covers full time dependent college student's "stuff", whether in a dorm or apt.

Now I haven't yet verbally checked with the company to see if there would be a possible waiver of this given the circumstances. But I'd be surprised. We're advising S to do full time but make sure the last 3 hours are very easy....he's coming in the 3rd week of classes.

lsw: My D is very interested in Northwestern. We sent an email on Friday and tried to call but their voice mailbox was full. Both my wife and I are from Chicago but now live in Maryland and have all of our family in the Chicago area (ha-ha, Chicagoland). It would be great if we could get her in NW. If you have any advice it would be appreciated. My email is tulanedad(at)gmail.com. Thanks in advance

I unfortunatly will be attending Rutgers. No offense to anyone who goes there now or likes the U, but I just don't really. I will however deal until Tulane is back.

Please let people know that beginning Tuesday, 9/6, there will be a support group for displaced Tulane students who are in the Dallas area. This is for ANYONE involved with Tulane (students, faculty, alum, families). At this first meeting, a VP from Tulane will be speaking with the group, as well as a professor from the music dept who is now in Dallas. Counselors (licensed social workers)will be on-hand to provide any assistance as well.

Got there 4:30 AM this Tuesday morning after my S's Tulane Big Brother told him to get up as quickly as possible. There were already 4 Tulane students who drove up from Atlanta, soon to be joined by 5 others. The Cornell people were wonderful and helped to make everything smooth.

Lehigh and Carneigh seems to have been late in responding, and seems to not have a high number of inquiring students, but seems eager to help.
