Where Will You Spend This Semester?

S is attending the University of Georgia, registering for classes and moving into the dorm on Tuesday.

UGA has been really wonderful....every contact they gave me was the head of a department. They want these kids to be streamlined into the university with absolutely no red tape. He will room in a freshman dorm with a UGA student who apparently eagerly volunteered to host a hurricane student. Right across the hall will be another Tulane student, also "hosted" by a UGA student.

They are holding a special orientation, a special welcome reception, and in general are making life as easy as possible. No paperwork required so far, mainly because S had applied and been accepted previously. The biggest challenge is that classes already started 2 weeks ago. But even then, one of the Deans told me they are acutely aware of the challenges these kids face--not just physical relocation but an emotional relocation as well. I felt quite encouraged by the very personal treatment I believe he will receive.

He's really heartbroken over this loss of having the freshman experience in a city he's grown to love and a college he believes in. He still continues to watch the news constantly, worrying about what will become of NO.
