And btw, Carleton definitely isn’t mediocre! :D

tsenguun, I think I’ll go to Grinnell, nice place ;)

If cornfields are your thing, definitely! ;)

daniel- you arent going to Amherst! wow- i wish i could switch my acceptance with you!

Thanks for the opinions guys- i am still stuck b/w carleton and emory.
Ah well i have another 15days so i can take time.

I have given my heart to Carleton but Emory makes more sense to go to- wierd i know!

From what i have heard(read more likely) Emory is full of cliques and people generally form groups while at carleton people are very open and friendly.

Also i have lived in a very small campus outside a city all my life and i love it - so i’d have no problem with carleton and its settings.

But then there’s the weather thing- i don’t know how i will survive in the cold of minnesota! Confusion Confusion Confusion.

Also i wanted to ask you guys- a college gives you a finaid offer for a year- how likely is it to change next year.
Carleton need gapped me 4000$ which is not a big amount while emory did not need gap at all. For the first year its fine- but what if carleton increases its gap and gives me a bigger loan next year.
How likely are colleges to meet full need in the second year and change the initial package.

One more thing- i got a letter from carleton’s economics department and it states that they take 50 econoimics majors each year.
Is it possible to not get the major you want- are there some GPA requirements for your major?

Thanks guys

Shreya you must be really good to be admitted to such great universities with great financial aid offers. Congratulation!

BTW i have no advice for you.

I think you should contact Carleton directly regarding the economics thing

Shreya, Emory and Carleton are totally different schools in many ways. (Carleton offers the LAC experience. Emory offers a mid-sized school/urban experience: and that’s just for starters.) People applying to Carleton, don’t usually apply to Emory and vice versa, for this reason. (I realize Internationals have a differrent set of requiements, due to the need for financial aid.) I suggest you research each of them more extensively rather than taking a poll on CC, where you are just getting a reflection of individual poster’s tastes.

M’s mom- i know and i am doing the extensive research- i just wanted international opinions since most internationals have similar criterias.

I applied to Emory and Carleton both as they both are very strong in humanities.

FAIZAN- I would love to think i am very smart - but actually i am an American citizen living in India- so the process shouldve been need blind for me.
Though i am very surprised that colleges like Boston university who easily need gap and give lots of loans met my full need in grant money. Thats flaterring!
My sat1 scores are fine, my sat 2 suck but I think my essays were real honest and had a lot of liberal thinking in them. I referred to Paul Krugman and George Monbiot along with lots of other stuff that i read. Also i guess my school leadership positions really helped.

shreya, the amount of loans awarded usually increases from year to year. Many colleges award the maximum amount of subsidized Stafford loans every year (from $3500 to $5500). The average graduate from Carleton has about $20,000 in federal loans at graduation; Emory does not even report this number…

I’d support Carleton too. Iv heard alot about Emory’s cliques and wouldnt want to go there…plus i’v hears Emory is one of the most over-rated top schools.

I can just see reasons not to goto Emory.

which are?

Just one of those pretender schools Emory is. Very overrated, as aj said.
Student body is rich and sort of snobby.
Country club like. Not the typical college experience at all.

Hey, FAIZAN?

It is great to see you. If I recall correctly, you are the home-schooled guy from Pakistan, and you did have really great SATI and II scores.

So how did everything go? Where did you get accepted?

ah well i decided Carleton it is!

Great, congrats!

And I’m not sure how this works, but you know how many colleges completely or partially (only for families with low incomes) eliminated loans starting this year? Well, I’m guessing other colleges (like Carleton) might start doing the same because of competition with colleges like Williams, Amherst, Colby, etc, that do not offer loans.

From the start my first choices were Amherst, Williams, and Grinnell (maybe a bit more inclined towards Amherst). However, Williams and Amherst want me to pay 13000$ while Grinnell only 5000$, a very big difference for my family.
In a way, it made things easier, now I know I’ll attend Grinnell. I think I’ll accept Grinnell’s offer today. :)

Why dont you contact the Amherst and Williams FA offices? Was some of the money Grinnell gave you merit aid?

^ can you do that. I Emory is giving me 4000$ more- can i contact the Carleton office -or would it seem very cheap?

Of course you can, it can never hurt. If the other school is giving you merit aid though, I wouldn’t do it, but if Grinnell is offering Daniel solely need based aid, he should absolutely try contacting FA at Amherst and Williams.

read the thread on the topic…it was a featured thread a few days ago
