Where would you go?

I am a junior and I am contemplating colleges that I should apply to. I don't want to waste time applying to a bunch of impossiblities so i wondered if you could suggest where you would go in my situation.

Race: Black male
Gpa:3.87 UW 5.49 W
Rank:16/526
No SAT yet (took it today) so PSAT:197
ECs:
Treasurer English Honor Society
Football, Track
Band(trumpet)
Science research(Quantum Mechanics)
Debate Captain
Mu Alpha Theta
Science Honor Society

The schools I was looking at are:
University of Texas
Upenn
MIT
Duke
Northwestern

Your list looks a bit reach heavy–MIT, Duke, NW, UPenn… Look through the forums for each of these schools. Very competitive and no guarantees even with great scores/GPA’s.

You need some match and safety schools.

i think you have a very good chance at these schools given your stats. you might also want to think about carnegie mellon and cal tech given your interests. to be perfectly honest, your psat score is a bit lower than what i expected with your gpa and ranking, which are amazing. with 700+ SAT scores, there would not be many “impossibilities”…
northwestern and duke both seem more like matches than reaches (depending on sat of course), but add maybe a few more possibilities-- what about university of chicago too? if you actually like quantum physics, you may have a really good match in that school ;)

If you’re interested in math and science, you could add Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech as safety/match schools (depending on SATs)

bump, bummpity

What would you like to study in college? You’ll get different recommendations based on the answer (like engineering).

You are very competitive at all of those actually. You should throw in another safety or two though.

i would try for cornell (great physics), depending on your SATs. you have good rank, good ECs, and minority status. shoot for at least 700 math, and 650 in CR and writing. then remember to take SAT 2’s.

Are you in-state at UT? If so, go there. It’s a great (and fun) school, and you’d be saving a lot of money.

I am instate so UT is a great option. Really UT is my only safety and it doesn’t make sense to apply to more, since a safety like UT is already good. I plan to major in finance or engineering preferably a combination of some sort.

Case Western in Cleveland might be a good match. Good engineering and business programs.

Case doesn’t seem to be worth it, i mean the distance and cost compared to UT. Are you from Ohio?

I am from Ohio, but Case offers pretty good aid so they may be competitive with UT.

Move to Liechtenstein and you’re in.

I would take a look at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It has very strong programs and they are especially your interests (business/engineering). However, 1 thing that is very bad about this school is its financial aid. they dont give good money, and if u get rejected by all ur reaches (altho i don’t think u will) i would go to UT

good luck!

Thanks for all the input! ^_^
