patsmom,
“As is the case with most of your posts, Miami. So why do you bother, unless it’s just to tout your daughter’s full tuition merit scholarship and val status?”
-So why do you bother to answer my posts? I have no questions whatsoever, I did not reply to you either. OP asked where you suggest your child go. I did not answer for YOUR child, why you are answering for mine. I have answered OP, not you, I have used my child example, as I was asked by OP, not yours. If you have an answer, please, reply to OP, I have no questions, you just made me laugh…very funny…And actually, I have many PMs telling me that I was very helpful and asking me to continue. I will listen to them, not to you. Just put me on ignore lisr is you are so iritated by my posts, This is for entertainment, not for getting irritated. Unfortuantely, my list is full…cannot add anymore
I don’t see that the Oberlin ship has sailed at all. Most GCs are used to s couple of last minute additions, and colleges know all materials from the high schools don’t always come in on time.
Maybe I missed it in your posts, but what is your home state? How about U of MN - TC? Not terrible OOS tuition, liberal/accepting community, solid school.
@OP if u are not admitted into Barrett, wd u still want to go to ASU?
No, Oberlin should still be possible - colleges don’t expect every piece of paper from the schools to come on time. It was no issue when one of my older son’s teacher recommendations went missing and got sent in a month after it was due.
I agree with more inbetween schools. Oberlin good. Grinnell? Carleton?
If we knew your state, could offer 1-2 other choices. If you ask for one last minute transcript sent, may as well go for 2-3.
It’s not too late to add a few more schools, if you don’t mind writing a few more essays. And now that most apps have been processed by your guidance dept, they could probably get your paperwork sent very quickly if it’s a common app school - ours can do it in a day since everything is online. This is a great link that lists schools and their app dates - plenty are still 1/15 and later. http://time.com/money/3652370/best-colleges-late-application-deadline/
Good luck to you. Congrats on great scores and GPA!
umm… isn’t this a reply to her?
@daughterofcoul You mentioned NHRP Scholar so I assume you are hispanic/latina. You should quickly apply to UW-Madison, and also apply to the Chancellor’s Scholarship Program.
As an under represented minority with high stats you fit the profile (financial need is not a requirement). The deadline is February 2.
This merit scholarship is a 4-year scholarship covering resident or non-resident tuition, plus $400 annually for books. Dorm and food would cost you about $10,000.
Since you are from Illinois, travel costs to UW-Madison are much cheaper than to NYU or ASU.
@daughterofcoul Here are some links for you:

Barrett at ASU is awesome. DS and I toured in October and were very impressed. (We are AZ residents.) I know they are processing a bunch of applications now, so you may hear as soon as tomorrow about your Barrett acceptance…Without Barrett ASU would be a lot lower on our list, only because it is just such a huge school. But Barrett has it’s own area and it’s really nice.
I’d also look at places like Reed and New College of Florida that might be a good match for you. It sounds like you need an intellectual environment with diverse students.
Good luck!
I was going at suggest New College of Florida as well. I think their deadline isn’t until February. Many LAC’s have February deadlines; not the reachy ones but the good lesser known ones that would give you significant merit awards. Look on the College Simply website and take a look at the list by deadline.
Reed gives no merit aid, I don’t think that would work for the OP.
I was also going to suggest New College of Florida. They have rolling admissions and offer generous scholarships to out of state students. But to your original question, if you were my child, I would have encouraged you to find more match schools, fewer reaches, and definitely, the safeties you chose. But the good news is that you already know you have some place to go next year and have a great scholarship!
You didn’t apply to University of Illinois? I’d choose that over the state schools you have applied to.
Again thanks to everyone who has commented so far. To clear this up, I am from IL. Now on to specifics.
@mathyone I was going to apply there, but I had a terrible experience at the tour/info session I attended and have been turned off ever since. Also I want to go a bit farther from home than that.
@Massmomm & @SlackerMomMD @chris17mom Thank you! I’ll definitely take a look into the New College of Florida. I’d never even heard of it before today.
@Madison85 Those links will be super-helpful, as is the info about UW-Madison! It’s a little close for my liking, but I’ll look into it all the same.
@twinsmom15 Thanks! I will definitely check out that site. In the morning.
@GMTplus7 Probably not; ASU itself seems to be a bit too big for my liking. The draw of Barrett is its more tight-knit setting/community. I’ll be visiting in March, though, so I guess I’ll find out what I really think about it then.
@daughterofcoul yes, Madison is close to Illinois, but it may have what you are looking for (especially if you earn a full non-resident tuition scholarship)!
I can tell you that many of my kids’ high school friends in Madison, who also thought UW-Madison was too close, transferred back to Madison after their first year of college in another state.
Do you have time to apply this weekend and start working on the Chancellor’s / Powers Knapp application?
(Maybe you already mentioned this, but what is your intended major)?
There are multiple factors determine the list of schools to apply. Affordability, admission chance, financial aid/cost, major/program, campus setting and location, etc. In most cases, in state flagship should be included in the list.
Did you find out if you were accepted at Barrett yet? My son got an acceptance letter yesterday, much to my relief since it is one of our two really solid safety choices. You should definitely visit. Barrett is just really, really nice. The dorms are super clean and modern and the dining hall is great (reminds me of some of the dining choices on a few cruises I’ve been on!) I believe they are giving honors kids a really top-notch set-up in order to draw them to the school. Also, Tempe is very nice overall. The sun is almost always shining, palm trees are everywhere, and it’s only ungodly hot from about May-September, at which time you would probably not be on campus anyways. However, it is still a big public school, so what you get is a huge cross-section of the Arizona population (sprinkled with some out-of-state and international students). Contrary to our reputation, Arizona people are actually very nice, normal and down to earth, in my opinion. And relatively happy and positive, due to the constant sunshine! However, at a school like New College of Florida, you would have a really neat population of alternative, intellectual types, where you might find some really wonderful and unique friends! If its at all possible you should really visit both campuses, because I think they are going to be very different from each other!
Good luck!
@chris17mom I’m actually sending in my Barrett app this week, so it’ll be a while before I find anything out. Thanks!
@Madison85 I’m planning on majoring in English (not teaching) and maybe minoring in Psychology or German (or both!)
