Where you come from

I'm applying to transfer to Columbia for Fall 2010 and I was curious about something.

Does the school you are transferring FROM matter all that much? Say two people were applying, one from a community college with a 3.9 GPA, and one from a more prestigious university (doesn't matter--Northwestern, Rice, Stanford, any of them) with a 3.5 GPA. Does the student at the better school get more "slack" on his grades because the school is "more challenging", or is it just about how you do, regardless of where you come from?

I'm currently a freshman at Cornell with a 3.9, so while this isn't entirely applicable to me, I was just wondering.

School does matter, but it’s impossible to say that x.x gpa at college A is equal to x.x at college B.

I think that the 3.9 is more impressive because it is a higher grade point average, and depending on the ecs of both applicants the 3.9 has a better chance of being admitted…
