Where's all the stuff?

How long after the check is sent do they start sending the stuff that mak feel like a real student? Do they do a bulk mailing or something after May 1? I will say however that he got two letters from Amherst and Colgate today... dying to know what they say but assume it's something like, sorry you made a different decision and best of luck to you.

They won’t know who accepted their offers of admission until the middle of next week. Once the class is nailed down, they’ll start sending you all sorts of stuff. In fact, there may come a point when you’ll say “why do they keep sending me all this crap!”

Oddly, Middlebury was the one school where there was never a lot of mail or other information coming at you.

And I guess the question of dorm space isn’t really relevant in a smaller school… vs the big school where if you don’t send in room stuff you risk not having one or getting last choice. At Midd that first year is all a crap shoot anyway, isn’t it?

Room assignments depend on which first-year seminar (intensive writing course) your S selects. Each is grouped together in one of the 5 commons (residential neighborhoods).

Allen (Atwater Commons) is probably the best first-year dorm (size-wise), though Stewart (Brainerd Commons) is on the hill and the closest first-year dorm to the center for the arts, athletic complex, and Proctor Dining hall.

So…if he is picky about location, he might select a first-year seminar affiliated with the commons whose location he likes. That said, I don’t know if the College publishes the affiliations for each seminar before first-year seminar registration. You will need to ask.

All this said, it really doesn’t make much difference: even kids who are in Battell (the largest first-year residence hall), which is probably in the worst physical condition of the first-year dorms, claim they love the experience.

Most (but not all) First Year Seminars are associated with a Commons. That being said, no one will tell you which seminar is with which commons. there is not posted list. no need to really worry about dorms. It is what it is, and all kids love where they are.

I agree with 3girls, pick the seminar that you are MOST INTERESTED IN and don’t worry about what dorm you end up in at all. I spent a night in Battell during Preview Days and found it quite adaquate (Clean bathrooms, not too cramped dorm rooms with windows, cable TV in Common room)
