Where's the moolah?

Hey guys~ If any of you guys can help me or are experiencing the same...

I applied in early January and was accepted to UMich LSA in early February, but I still haven't received my financial package in the mail. Just a few days ago though, I received an email, stating an "update" in my financial info- so I went to the according website, and it shows that they're only giving me a Federal Loan, no scholarship, no nothing. I'm really confused... is this all that they're really giving me? Is another "updated" financial package coming in the mail soon? The thing is... I thought my stats were good enough to get me at least some amount of scholarship money. for instance, UR's giving me $12,000 per year. Should I give admissions a call or... is this all? where is the mooolah?

I would definitely call them. Without sounding pretentious (applicants? pretentious? never!), let them know that you've gotten scholarships from other programs and ask when the earliest you should expect to hear about more funding.

It is certainly a delicate, tactful dance.

It may be worth a call. But keep in mind that schools have different policies, different scholarship funding, and different applicant and admit profiles.

Typically, private schools do more tuition discounting than do public schools. They have more funds dedicated to merit money, and a smaller recruiting class to spread them around to.

I don't know anything about your stats, of course--this may not apply to you, but I put it out there because others may have similar questions. Remember also that a school's selectivity--and where you fit in their typical student profile--can also impact whether or not you get merit money. The same student who is offered an academic scholarship one place, may get no merit dollars at another.

That last part may sound like pretty basic, obvious stuff, but you'd be surprised by the number of families who express outrage that a merit package at an open-access school isn't matched by U-M. Of course UR (whether you mean Richmond or Rochester) doesn't fall in that category.

thanks soo much for the great advice~ im gonna call them asap!
