WhereToPutMyED

I am a junior in PA. I was valedictorian freshman year, 3rd place sophmore, and I expect to fall in that range this year, but I am only of a class of about 70.

SAT: I don't know but I took two practice tests and my best was an embarrasing 2100. I will get better.
SAT II: I plan to take Math 1, Math 2, Physics, and if i have time in october then three others. I'll probably do decently. around the 700-750 area if I were to test this second without preperation.

Clubs:
Freshman: Wiz Kidz (quizbowl), PJAS
Sophmore: Academic Sports league, Wiz Kidz, Latin Club (well I at least appeared in the picture in the year book-I'll take it), Photo Club
Junior: Model UN, Debate, Wiz Kidz, ASL, NAHS, Environmental Club, hmmm It feel like I am missing something
Senior: Model UN, Debate, Wiz Kidz, ASL, NAHS, Envirnonmental Club, Photo club, NHS

Community Service:
Tutoring underpriveleged kids for a total of over 100 hours

GPA: I don't know. But my gpa should be around 3.8-4.0. it was 4.0 first semester.

Academic Awards (that I can remember): Not a single quarter in which i didn't get 1st or 2nd honors; "Pro
praestantia linguae latinae studio tribuit in 2009 -excellence in
latin).dang 3rd place in PJAS because the judge didn't know what he was
doing;
Cirtificate of appreciation up and comming artists in 2009; Last year I
also remember that I got anothe Excellence in Latin and an Excellence
in junior science (last year I was a sophmore) chemistry. For the national latin 4 exam "magna cum laude"

All of the classes are either AP or Honors.

MATH:
Algebra 1 (tested out); Geometry (tested out). Algebra II and
Precalc/trig taken Freshman year. nothing fot first half sophmore then
calc II second semester sophmore at community college, harvard smmer (technically passed)
Multivariable Calc (I got a C plus) and Linear Algebra (with a C), Now I took Calc III at community college and Differential equations
right now.

ENGLISH:
I will have finished 4 years of english (two of which AP courses) by
graduation from highschool

HISTORY:
I will have taken 3 years of History and Government next year. This
year I am taking AP american history

SCIENCE:
Earth science freshman, chemistry and biology sophmore, physics at community college junior year.

OTHERS:
I have taken Photo 1 (semester) Graphic Design (semester and photo 3
Semester. I sadly havn't taken any music classes but I am opting for AP
music theory next year.

I have many omissions. Next year I will only have three credits at my highschool. I will take 24 credits (8 semester courses) at the community college-i should have graduated early but i didn't.

I am currently in my 4th year of Latin

I am going back to Harvard SSP this summer probably to take Atronamy and philosophy.

Hook:
I am currently doing a sort of internship/supervised research project in statistical mechanics under a University professor.

My application essays are going to be 1. What I plan to give back, why compassion is a part of my life, how going to_(school)_____ will empowerme with what I need to do so
and 2. Undecided (to compliment Harvard decision*see under "college admissions" the thing called "SSP dilemma")

I am really good at the piano (actually, not to be immodest but to give a clear idea-i am excellent especially considering that I have only had a piano for two years) and i plan to submit a portfolio of recordings, Chopin and my own compositions

I will also submit my latest sonata (21 pages and 11 glorious minutes) as my compositional portfolio.

I ALSO will submit a portfolio of my photography.

I want to become a theoretical physicist, hence the advanced math and the research project. The schools that I am looking at are

1 Washington Seattle 57% #41
2. Carnegi Mellon 36% #23
3. Johns Hopkins 27% #13
4. University of Chicago 27% #9
5. Berkeley 22% #22
6. UPenn (ED) 16% #5
7. MIT 10% #7
8. Yale 8% #3

I would be "legacy" for Yale and Cornell, and Cornell would be my school if I liked the prospect of snowstorms in Ithica. Now MIT is every physics-boy's dream school. I am pushing it with most of these schools but the reason i post this is to find out how much. MIT's Early decision doesn not increase chances of admission but UPenn's does significantly. it will bring UPenn's rate of admissions (that is what the percents are above, the numbers are the US News rankings) up to about 30%. I would be superdooper happy at UPenn, but, of course, it would be a shame to get into MIT regular decision and UPenn ED and have to withdrall from MIT. So I want to know what you thing: should I apply ED to UPenn and shoot at the moon or should i not apply ED anywhere and apply to MIT shooting for Jupiter's moon?

Legacy counts a lot during ED/EA round. Don’t throw it away.

Unless you are amazing with Piano, I wouldn’t bother with supplement. There are too many good piano players.

I am honestly amazing at the piano. I didn’t know that legacy helped that much. When you say that do you mean that I should do ED Yale or suck it up about the weather and living in the middle of nowhere and apply ED Cornell?

Legacy only matters during ED/EA. It is your most important free option. If you don’t ED/EA at Cornell or Yale, you would be throwing it away. It also depends at which school you are a stronger legacy. Strongest legacy would be parent(s) attended UG, have stayed involved, and gave money. Grandparent(s) connection won’t get you much.

Admission is very competitive now. You are a strong candidate, but you don’t have anything that would make you stand out for schools like MIT or Yale. Your strongest hook is your legacy status. If you were my kid, I would tell you to ED Cornell, unless you are a strong legacy at Yale. On the other hand, if you are absolutely in love with UPenn, I would ED there because your chance of getting into UPenn would go down quite a bit during RD. If you are a girl, then you would have a good chance at MIT, otherwise, no.

I totally agree with Oldfort. I think you play a legacy card at ED/EA or not at all.

Lot of your profile is hypothetical in terms of scores and GPA. Did you take any AP exams?

If you are so far ahead in Math, why have nt you already taken your SAT IIs? No one puts off all their tests to October if they are planning to do an EA/ED. It is too late for a reattempt if things dont go well. You need to complete some of them in June.

Taking both Math 1 and Math 2 is redundant. You should probably do Latin if you feel comfortable with it.

OldFort, Thank you. YOu give objective advice. I have family from Harvard, Yale, MIT, Cornell, and other great places. They don’t advise me as much as they encourage/inspire me. This really helps. I am a legacy for yale by one grandparent. I am a legacy for Cornell by two grandparents. No legacies for parents. My thought was that legacy to Cornell wouldn’t help me that much. While Cornell is less selective than Penn, it is only so by a small to moderate ammount. Therefore I may as well apply ED to Penn. You did answer one question for me though. I should do ED for either Cornell or Penn and not hope MIT. I am a caucasian boy, so yes i do not stand out for MIT. With the fact that legacy is just for grandparents who are not millionaires in mind where should I put my ED? I don’t know how much they contribute and unless class reunions count as “involved” I don’t know how involved they are. but say they arn’t, where should I put my ED? and if i find out that they are, which i am going to ask in an email right now, does that affect the ED placement?

I am familiar with Cornell. They do count grandparents (some schools don’t). If your grandparents have been involved (even if slightly involved), they could write to the school’s alumni office. They could arrange a special tour for you and arrange meetings with professors, and you may even be considered as an “applicant of interest” if your grandparents have been very involved. At least with an introduction from your grandparents, you could start a disalogue with someone at Cornell (alumni office and admission).

Consult your school’s GC (I think you said a private school?), he/she should give you a better feel about your chance at MIT. I think UPenn and Cornell are pretty compatible. If you really prefer UPenn (location, size) over Cornell, then ED UPenn, but having 2 grandparents from Cornell would give you a push. You are a strong applicant, so I wouldn’t be surprised if you would have a very good shot at both of those schools, especially during ED.

2100 isn’t an embarrassing score. That gpa, if weighted, should be something to be worried about though.

Missed SATs. Need to bring up those scores, and take some SAT IIs by June, not to wait until Oct.

no it is 4 out of 4 scale. if it was weighted it would be 5.7-6 out of 6

ok thank you, guys
