Which 1500 SAT is BEST

For applying to HYP or a top lac, which would you rather have: 800V/700M, 700V/800M or 750/750,

The last one.

From what I can tell 800v/700m is the best because fewer students score very high on verbal than on math.

My son's first SAT score was 700V/800M and his GC recommended he take it again.

Go verbal!

The top Verbal score is rarer (as has been noted) and is harder to coach/prep for than an improved Math score.

I have an 800V 700M and it def. is interesting. Even at engineering schools it seems to be alright, because the 800V is so rare there on non 1600 apps. Just make sure your SATII math is high so that your math ability comes across.

I wish I had gotten an 800V score...I only got 760 :(

bummer dude

Yeah, I agree with kirb, the diff. SAT tests test different things, so do good on Math 2c if you don't do good on SAT 1 math. Same with writing as compared to SAT 1 verbal.

I'd go with the last one - 750/750

It depends what you're looking to major in: if, like me, you're going to be a math major, and your application emphasizes that, then the 800 on math is preferable - i had 800m/710v and got in ED to P, so it worked for me ;)

i think i'd also prefer the 800 in math, since i want to do engineering. my real math score is actually lower than my verbal, though, but i'm still pretty happy with it.

I think a 800v engineering applicant will have the edge.

I would go with 750/750, only because 700 math is a little low. That means you must have missed some easy problems, not just the last few in the section. A higher verbal score is probably better in all cases as long as math isn't too far behind. A high verbal doesn't mean you're destined to become an English major, it just means that you're pretty sharp and can read into things, which is important in all fields.

Actually - the schools will see all the scores and will take the highest of each - soooooooooooooooo - they will be taking 800v - 800m.

"A high verbal doesn't mean you're destined to become an English major, it just means that you're pretty sharp and can read into things, which is important in all fields."

that's true. i have an 800 in verbal and english is my worst subject by far.

For HYP the question of which score is better is rediculous. At HYP all apps with SATS between 1,425 -1,600 and 3 SAT IIs averaging 725+ get a good look. After that the focus is on everything else. That is why you see so many people being rejected with those scores at hyp. They don't have "everything else". Don't waste your time splitting hairs on variations of the SAT scores (that's not where it's at).

The NBER study shows that at Harvard, chances of admission rise uniformly with SATs. Perhaps you are thinkig of Princeton, where chances rise with SATS and then dip at the point where Princeton decides it will lose out to HYS, and rejects applicants to fool those who rely on surveys such as you rely on.

I'd infinitely prefer 750/750 over the other two options. In some cases, such as mine, the difference between 800 math and 750 math was 2 questions...there's no way I'd ever believe that those two questions make the 800 person better. In either case, 700 is fairly low, but 750 is 98th-99th percentile. Plus, balance is better in my opinion...being skewed to one side or the other makes you a weaker overall student.

That's exactly why no one reads the NBER report, (a biased report written by 2 Harvard employees not in the college business). I prefer to read the guides and publications that actually sell.
If you believe SAT scores are going to get you into HYP, look at the threads containing the many rejected with higher scores than those you quoted (how do you explain all the 1600 scorers who are rejected?). Sorry, hope you have back-up schools selected.
