Which AP credits should I use?

Hi! I’m an incoming freshman, and the ChemE department is making us come up with a schedule before orientation for some reason.

I have AP credits for Calc AB, Chem, and English Lang. I will probably get credits for BC, English Lit, Gov, and CS. I will use my English and Gov credits. I won’t use my calc credits because my teacher was godawful and I should probably retake calc. I don’t think CS counts for anything in my degree plan.

Should I use my AP credits to skip out of chem lab (CH204)? I will probably take Gen Chem2 (CH302). Are there any other AP credits that I should use that I’m not using?

Thanks!

The CS won’t cover a general elective credit?

You know your ability in calculus a LOT better than I do, but M 408K is just differential calculus. If you took both AP Calculus AB, and BC in different years I think you should be good to skip M 408K. A lot of freshman classes are weed out classes - especially economics.

Sorry I’m replying extremely late. I hopped from orientation to Spain, so I’ve been quite busy. At orientation, there were tornado and flash flood warnings at the same time. What an adventure! My clothes and shoes got soaked through. I ended up deciding to add intro bio and M408C on my schedule and will take my AP Chem credits per advisor suggestion.

@gettingschooled Apparently not (for my degree plan at least). It sucks :frowning:
@Brycifer I’m an engineering major, so I’d be taking M408C, which is differential and integral calc! I was going to take microecon as my social science GE because it would work torward a business and finance certificate (I like business and plan to eventually get an MBA), but my advisor told me the certificate wasn’t worth it. I also heard from students that most of the econ teachers are hell. I still have micro on my schedule as of now, but I may change it to a sociology class. No idea what to do as of now, lol.

@imthereal I’m surprised to read that your advisor said the business certificate isn’t worth it. Did she say why? Were you thinking about the 15 hr summer one or the 24 hr one? Which UGS class did you get in?

@imthereal That’s right you do have different maths. I forget because they tried getting me to do science major math, and I lol’d at that. IN my opinion don’t claim credit for calculus then. No point since UT has different standards than AP. The intro econ classes are weed-out. Hamermesh is a hard guy to get a good grade with, but he is a world known economist comparable to Mankiw so you’ll walk out of there learning something. I don’t know anything about certificates since I’m a finance major, so I go through all of that anyway. If you’re nervous about your GPA take it slow first semester.

Good news! I passed all my APs with scores necessary to claim credit, including AP Physics C (I “self-studied” and didn’t think I would pass. The curve is amazing). I’m definitely taking AP credit for physics based on advisor/peer advisor suggestions. I’ll also take the lit and gov credit (assuming I do decently on the gov placement test). Thanks for all of your replies, btw!

@goincrazy I was extremely surprised as well. She basically told me that the ChemE majors are more than prepared for leadership positions in business areas. I tried explaining to her that I wanted the certificate for credential purposes and that I planned to get an MBA and she told me a story about a former ChemE student who was going to pursue an MBA from a top school, didn’t, and ended up managing a bunch of MBAs anyway, lol. Regardless, I’m probably going to work torward the certificate through the semester-based program (I don’t want to pay for the summer institute). My UGS is “Immigration Policy Impacts in the US”. It was originally a Bollywood one, but I thought immigration policy was more interesting.

@Brycifer I’d like to get a solid calc foundation, so I think taking 408C is a good idea. I will have Hammermesh (better than Hickenbottom from what I’ve heard, so I’m glad) and would like to learn economics well, so I can probably take a hit to my GPA. Hopefully I can keep it >=3.5 (mainly so I can take research classes and do a thesis). Next semester it seems like I’ll have wiggle-room for easy GPA-booster classes. My schedule so far consists of M408C, Intro to ChE, a first year UGS class, ECO 304K, and BIO 311C for a grand total of 14 hours. Would you suggest taking another class, or is that too much? I was thinking of finding a VAPA or American History, but I couldn’t find any classes that were open and would fit into my schedule :frowning:
