Which AP Would Look Better?

Hi! I can only take 4 AP class for my senior year. I am trying to decide between AP French and AP Gov. This year (junior year) I have taken AP U.S. History, AP English Language and Composition, and AP Environmental Science. Next year I am definitely taking AP Calculus A, AP Biology, and AP English Literature. Should I take AP French or AP Gov?

The main colleges I'm thinking about right now are Bucknell, Gettysburg, Mt. Saint Mary's, St. Mary's (maryland), William & Mary, Washington College, and Loyola MD.

Thanks!

I would lean toward AP French, if you are already doing well in your prior French classes. Either one is actually fine if you really didn’t want to take another year of language and you’ve already achieved at least Level IV in French, but AP French has slightly more weight than AP Gov.

The reality is, taking either one will probably serve you equally well for admission purposes, although there’s a chance AP French will get you out of a language requirement (or allow you to take fewer semesters) at some colleges.

Have you taken up to French 3 or French 4 (schools do this differently). If you do not take AP French, can you still take French 4? Do your target schools require the equivalent of 4 years of high school foreign language as part of their gen ed requirements? Does your school offer a non-AP Gov class? Many schools require American Govt as a graduation requirement.

I am currently taking French 3. I am looking at smaller liberal arts schools that strongly recommend 4 years of foreign language as well as 4 years of history. My school unfortunately does not offer a non-AP Gov class, but does not require the class be taken in order to graduate.

Thanks!

AP French hands down, without question. And don’t say “only taking four” – that is a big courseload for senior year and any more than that is not necessarily seen as “favorable” by colleges, and yet often seen as insane by colleges :)

William and Mary definitely requires or heavily recommends 4 years of language. Other than that, if AP French allows you to be proficient enough to place out of language in college it is definitely worth more than AP govt which will just be another social science credit.

And one more vote for AP French for all the reasons mentioned.

yet one more vote for AP French :)

Since you don’t have a level 4 French, you should go for the AP French. This would make your curriculum more competitive for the schools that recommend 4 years of world language. Also, AP French with a good score would usually give you more credits than AP government at most schools.

AP French. Competitive colleges would rather see 4 years of a language.
