I figured I could post this here to avoid as much of the STEM major bias as I can.

In the ever evolving process of planning which classes to take to transfer out of CC, I'm wondering which required science classes one should take if they're not a "science" person (i.e. just need the classes as reqs and have no intention of furthering their science endevors past those classes)? I've got to take one Physical science and one Life science class. Options are as follows:

I've taken Chemistry in HS and did so-so in the class (C+ I think), but I wasn't that into it. I took Geography in HS and remember doing fairly well, so I plan to take that for my Physical req unless there are other suggestions.

So which ones are good to get the reqs out of the way? Thanks for the input!

Check with where you are transferring to. I know that I my school you must take a lab and you might be able to pair that with geology, which is easier than chem.
I took intro to bio last semester and I really like it. It was an 8AM class and many people failed because they stopped going - but that could have been any class.

Enviro Sci is easy for me. I tok it in summer school and it was easy. The tests are somewhat easy, but the prof lectured for 30min every day, and we spent the next 90min on the computer, on the phones, or just nap in class. A lot of free time in that class, but had somewhat reasonable test.

A lab is required for one of the classes (either Physical or Life). Since I plan on Geography, which doesn’t have a lab, for the Physical part, my Life choice will need to include a lab.

S which would be the best/easiest to just get out of the way with a lab: Anthro, Bio, or EnvSci?

I’m really trying to avoid Atronomy w/lab so I don’t need to be in class at midnight.

I aced intro to biology, but I’m pretty sure I have to take a physical science as well, so I’ll be taking astronomy. I think it helps if you pick something you have at least a mild interest in.

I took geography, anthro and bio as a senior in hs at a commuter college. Maybe just how it was taught but geography was so boring to me, just memorization even with the lab. Add to that it was 4 hours straight, yet the class ended halfway thru, and still I could barely stand it. Anthro and bio kept me awake, but all 3 were pretty damn easy compared to chem or physics, even though they were hs classes. If you got a C+ in chem that should be a no brainer to stay away.

I would take anthro (more of a social science) and maybe astronomy (sounds fascinating). However if you can tolerate just memorizing rocks and wind currents and such, then geography is an easy A. Bio if you have a lab might involve dissecting crap and will be completely natural science.

Biology is actually very easy as most of the material you learn in class can be Googled. I also hear that Astronomy is one of the easiest science classes you could ever take.

Most Lib. Arts majors I know take Anthropology or Astronomy.

I’ll briefly touch on my experience with anthropology: I think it may depend on what your Anthropology class constitutes, if it’s primarily cultural class it’ll probably be “easier.” However, if it’s fulfilling a science credit there’s a possibility there will be a biological emphasis to the material. In my case this involved memorizing phylogenetic trees, identifying bones/anatomy, and understanding concepts behind evolution (genetics, natural selection, etc).

A friend of mine took Astronomy and said there was some math involved, so if that’s a big turn off, consider this a heads up.

Of course syllabi change from Professor to Professor and university to university so your classes could be completely different.

EnvSci holds the most interest to me, I think, but would prefer to pass it up if something else was easier, say Biology.

This is a general recurring theme for the Geo profs at my school on Rate My Professor. Even though I remember doing well with it in HS, that makes me stray from it.

I’m leaning more towards Biology (with lab) since it’s seems like a good medium between interest and easiness.

I am getting a little more interested in Astronomy now that I think about it, especially if I do Bio with a lab so I won’t have to do one with Astro. I had a telescope when I was a kid and remember reading tons of books about planets and I was really into it for a while (like Jr High - HS Freshman). I’m not terrible at math by any means, so I wouldn’t be worried about that. Plus, one of my classmates mentioned today that they were taking an Astro class and were getting into some interesting stuff, so I’ll have to ask them about it. I was turned off by Astro as a college class mainly b/c my wife took it in college and said it sucked/she hated it (I think mainly b/c she had the night lab) and another family member said they took it and it was hard.

Thanks for the suggestions so far! So right now I’m thinking Biology w/lab (for PhysSci) and Astronomy or Geography (for LifeSci).
