Looking from Florida to Massachusetts, for the best illustration/animation program for the money, this is for a URM, independent student with no income or assets and no parents' income or assets either, but with lots of talent and decent (1950/2400) SAT and GPA (3.7).

I have same question but not limited to east coast only.

I have heard that SAIC and MICA give out a lot of scholarship/grants but I can't say for certain. There's no guarantee though and all schools are different so you might as well apply and see what they say! Best of luck!

SCAD seems t ogive everyone some kind of scholarship (merit/talent and/or need based).

SCAD seems to be very generous with financial aid.

Ooo, definitely a good question. My son got to choose between full rides, but I worry that because my daughter is an art student, she'll be gapped or given loans. (Son is loan-free!) A friend has suggested applying to schools like Syracuse in addition to just-art schools, because she got much better aid there.

i just got 10k in aid from SCAD without a portfolio, if that gives you any idea

Did you do Rising Star this summer kewlioto?

no, but I did go to a SCAD-Day last spring and brought my portfolio, and applied then too

Cooper Union. If you get in its free. They dont like production type art or graphic or computer art in portfolios.
Dont rule out schools like Alfred university in upstate NY.

My d. is a freshman (first semester) in the MICA Illustration Program. She applied to many art & convention liberal arts colleges, and was accepted at all, except Cooper Union.

I found the most generous to be (in order of scholarship offers): MICA, SCAD, Kansas City Art Institute, Rochester Institute of Technology(RIT), Parsons and University of South Carolina.

The following offered no money/merit (except loans) whatsoever, Clemson University, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), and Ringling.

She is extremely happy at MICA.
S.Dad

That's good to know, S.Dad. Were the scholarships mostly for her portfolio or for academics? (or both?)

A combination of both from MICA for academics and portfolio. She also received merit from her pre-college summer program at MICA. SCAD just offered a single amount (over 4 years) but said it was based on both.

SCAD's offer depends on whether or not you stay on campus, off campus award is proportionately lower. Several are like this.

D. had SAT's >1900, AP Drawing grade of 5 (out of 5), and won several art awards including Scholastic art program (local awards not national). Several Science awards (some regional) and she had lots of EC's (National Park, local community service, State Museum, etc...)

MICA looks at everything, and gives bits and pieces of their awards based on what the student did over their high school period.

Pre-college reviews by art professors (sort of a pre-analysis of their abilities), I think was also important.
