I'm in 5 years Masters of Accountancy program and have been offered internships at Deloitte and KPMG in their tax practices. Right away, I was set on KPMG but then I talked to couple of partners from Deloitte and really liked them so now I am back to square one. The internship is going to be on the West Coast (not SF or LA) and KPMG has the larger office. I was wondering if anyone had input regarding either of these two places. Culture? Work-Life Balance (I know both will be terrible, which one is is the least terrible)? Moving up? Job security? Etc. Both will likely offer full time positions so this decision is extremely important for me!

Also, which of these two firms has the better reputation with regards to their tax practice?

Thanks! Any help will be appreciated.

from my time interning at Ernst & Young, some of the people were talking about Deloitte…rumors say that there are now more tax customers in Deloitte than KPMG…but it is a rumor, so i don’t know if you can depend on that…but it wouldn’t hurt to find out although i prefer Ernst & Young ;)

Deloitte is an award-winning company in the Work/Life arena. I can’t speak to its tax practice.

the work at big 4 is pretty similar no matter which one you go with. culture and work life balance is going to depend almost entirely on the engagement teams you’re on. you’ll just have to see for yourself.

moving up and job security? it’s up or out at the big 4.

i know the deloitte tax practice in the nyc area is pristine, can’t attest to the west coast.
