Hi, i've been trying to decide which kind of bio major to take in college, since there are so many to choose from. Since I am into math and computers, I am thinking about bio-mathematics at ucla or bio-informatics at ucsd. I don't really know that much about each major and would also like to know the competitiveness of these majors. Also, do these majors prepare you for med school in the same way as pre-med bio majors?

Jeanir, preparation for med school involves taking the med school prerequisites, period. Taking microbiology (for the organism names primarily) and biochemistry can be very helpful, but isn't really necessary. Not knowing exactly what is required for these majors, I don't know how many of the pre-reqs you will take in order to fulfill the major - sometimes these practical considerations out weigh your actual interests. Having said that, I know that medical informatics is a very hot field, and while it may not be better than biomath or plain biology for med school admissions, it will be of help in marketing yourself if you don't get into med school, and if you become interested in research, will also be valuable.

You need to do more research on these 2 majors, maybe contact some of the professors with specific questions.
