Curious if anyone has any information on which schools may or may not super score SSATs…thanks in advance.
I think many say they do but it’s the thought that they can’t un-see the other scores.
Andover told us they do this during our visit.
I also wonder how they actually do the superscoring as each section is not equally divided. Plus each sitting is likely carved up differently. I couldn’t come up with a weighting breakdown based on my child’s two sets of scores.
I had never heard of superscoring until we were at a Hotchkiss open house and they mentioned that they do it. I wasn’t paying close attention, but my recollection is that most/all of the Gladchemms said they do. I do not recall a school saying they do not.
Of course, all else equal, I think it is better not to rely on it. I agree they cannot “unsee”.
MAandMEmom,
Yes, I am not sure how one can DIY superscore, assuming you are trying to determine overall percentiles. Though you have the number of questions for each subsection, the weighted average of the percentiles does not foot to an overall percentile.
It’s not super scoring like in SAT, but what most of the schools do say is that they will look at the highest composite score and the highest subscore of each section if you send two sets of scores.
Of course, if you have one test in which you did pretty well everywhere you’d send only that one.
If you did all well in 90s and got say low 80s in quant at one test and then upper 90s in quant but low 80s in reading in the other seating, you’d send the both tests. (exaggerated example) They would consider that as you scored in 90s in both reading and math.
They cannot “unsee” the other scores so even if you did better in the reading but got 50s in quant, you would not send this particular one.
Are the reported median/average SSAT scores the result of school-level superscoring?
Periwinkle, most people believe so.
Yes @6teenSearch I wasn’t able to get it to match knowing I wouldn’t but it was a rough guesstimate I suppose. So if the reported SSAT scores are superscored, there must be a way to determine the overall percentage of superscoring.
We are somewhat in this conundrum as my guesstimate superscore for my child is 90% but the unsee issue is a concern.
It’s been about a year, but I think I remember my Exeter admissions officer telling that they superscore and my on-campus interviewer mentioning it.
Thanks for all the replies! Much appreciated.
pretty much all superscore (as told by an AO at Andover). what needs to be understood here is that the number is also used by the schools for their own promotional purposes as well…they use those (super)scores in their own data.
