I applied to three cal states: CSUN, CSUF, and SFSU. I was looking at some private schools, but I think they are too much and I don’t want to take out high loans. I know cal state fullerton has a really good program, but I was just curious about how well the other cal states compare to. I am looking for something that has an acting or performance emphasis, but I also want to learn producing. Plus I am looking to get into some student films as well.
Cal State Fullerton has a nationally recognized program, but you audition for it your sophomore year – so your first year is all gen ed.
SFSU has an Emphasis in Performance and it is a very production oriented program. Students have lots of opportunities to perform as well as learn about stage management, lighting, costume and set design. For students interested in directing, there are two courses and possibilities to direct in different classes and student run productions. An additional strength of SFSU is that it also has playwriting courses and staged readings to a Fringe series of student written and directed works. SFSU also has a study abroad program and you can choose to study drama at universities in UK/Australia/Canada).
