I got a 5 on AB but I'm not sure whether to take a or b at berk... Right now I'm in L&S but I'm thinking about Haas in the future... any advice?

They dont let you use any graphing calculators in calculus. But if you're good at it, a TI-89 Titanium would be the best. If not, a TI-84 Plus Silver Edition would work second best (for homework ONLY).

Sorry... should have been mre clear... Which calculus class should I take?

Check out the prereqs for majors you're interested in. You might be able to take 16. If you take the 1 series, you take 1a first.

but I thought if you choose to take the 1 series and you get a passing score on the AP test you can advance to a higher level...

You can take 1B if you want, but most freshmen who skip 1A fail 1B. 1A will be really easy for you, though, since you already know what they'll be teaching you. I took 1A my first semester and I got a 3 on the AB test, I never went to class and it was still easy for me. You only need the 16 series for Haas, which is SUPER easy, so I'd recommend taking 16A or 16B to get an easy A and concentrate on your other classes.

1B is an infamous weeder. If at all possible, take 16. It's only 3 units, though.

?!?
How about those who jump into M53? Yikes! I'm beginning to freak out! I got a 5 on the Calc AB test last year and this year I got a 4 on the Calc BC test and a 5 on the AB subscore (self studied BC). I decided I was going to take M53 a couple months ago. Should I reconsider? I'm pretty confident of my math skills and have heard the third semester of Calculus is mostly based off of Calc I (1A) rather than a continuation of Calc II (1B).

KupMup

I took Math 53 during my first semester (after a year without any math classes) and did alright - I had to work a little harder than my friends in Math 1B, but not by much, and the curve in 53 is a lot more forgiving. If anything, you're being scared about the course will make you study harder early on. If you're going to do engineering or physics (and based on your past posts, I think you are), your classes are only going to get harder, so you may as well create some space in your schedule later on.

On the other hand, if you want to get into Haas and don't envision yourself doing anything technical in the future, math 16b may be a better bet than math 1b. You will learn less, but Haas doesn't care about that, they care about your GPA.

The beginning calc series should really be taken as 1a-1b or 16a-16b, because chances are you won't be familiar with the prof's teaching and you don't want to start at a higher math class without knowing how to handle the material. As for math 53/54 it shouldn't be that bad. I took 54 and it was ok as long as you read the book and stuff. I heard 53 is harder, but really... you guys will be fine.

is 1B the same materials taught in CAlC BC ???

Obviously it will be much more in-depth.

KupMup: You should be fine if you take 53... it's just that 1B is based on 1A so freshmen don't know what professors are expecting. But if you qualify to get into 53, go for it, since it's not based on how Berkeley professors teach 1A and 1B.

Hi, I was wondering whether I should take Math 16A or Math 1A. I took 4 years of math in high school including Calculus and I scored a 6 on the IB math test. I am not planning to major in any sciences or math but I might want to major in economics. Can anyone help?

Econ only requires 16A at the least; there's absolutely no point in taking a harder math class than what's required. Trust me, you'll be so happy to laugh at everyone in 1A who's working harder than you =)
