Which California College to pick?

1) Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
2) Cal Poly Pomona
3) Cal State Chico
4) Cal State Fresno
5) UC Davis

I am currently going to a community college, so I will be considered a transfer student. My current GPA is 3.69, but I’m working to get it higher. I want to major in animal science. I’m not sure what I want to do as a career yet, maybe either training or breeding animals. I’m thinking about being an “applied animal behaviorist”. I do not want to be a vet. I am primarily interested in horses and dogs.

Which school do you think is best with ALL factors considered? (academic, nice area, weather- I’m not a big fan of snow or the cold, social life, hands-on experience, animal facilities on campus, and anything else). What would you choose??

Thanks!

^ Cal Poly SLO because not only do they have a “learn by doing” philosophy, they also can boast the mild climate and close proximity to the ocean and beaches. And, of course, plenty of animal facilities on campus. My daughter’s room mate is an animal science major and wants to work with large animals, specifically horses.

Yeah, Cal Poly’s probably the best. I think your GPA is actually very good!

Cal Poly or UC Davis. Both have a college town feel and have good programs in animal science. At Davis there will be many more people on the vet track, but they have a lot of animal science majors as well. Best of Luck!

I can’t answer your specific question of which university is best for you, but you might look at the schools that have strengths in a variety of majors. In addition to animal science, look at biology, wildlife biology, psychology, zoology, behavioral science and vet med. You’ll probably need a masters degree. Some CAABs are veterinarians who have completed a behavioral residency after completion of vet school. Keep exploring the field and the requirements to reaching your ultimate goal. Good luck!

ya Cal Poly SLO is actually my #1 choice, and then Davis. I said I was trying to raise my gpa because of school cutbacks and smaller classrooms and the colleges are becoming more choosy. I heard SLO isn’t even considering anyone with a gpa lower than 3.75 :/

^^ Are you talking about a weighted or unweighted GPA? Also, they have their own ranking system which usually will make it higher. Same with UC.

Also, it depends on your major at Cal Poly, ie; impacted and harder to get into. I imagine Animal Science would be easier to get into compared to something like Architecture or Engineering. Of course, I don’t know that for sure. I know that my daughter’s major of Kinesiology was difficult to get into this year. She also had been accepted to UC Davis, but chose Cal Poly SLO for a variety of reasons. It costs less, too! ;)

I cant stand when people talk about “o well if you don’t have such and such gpa or test scores, they wont even consider you.” That is a bunch of bull. Just apply and see if you get it, no harm no foul. I am currently a freshmen here at Cal Poly and got in with bad test scores (25 Act) and okay GPA-4.0. So it all really depends how many people are applying to major and how many spaces open. Just try it and see what’s up. Dont listen to this bs from people saying about having a certain gpa and test scores, they are lies
